HiFI 29er Brake noise (haul)

I bought my HiFi 29e rplus last August,up graded the breaks to XT 2009.
After 3 month of riding the rear break started to produce strong noise when applied.
I ride mainly single track, but nothing to harsh. The shop changed every part but the caliper and handle
Does any one encounter similar problem, I love the bike but it’s beyond annoying.

Try cleaning your rotors with alcohol and a clean rag . You can also scuff your brake pads with sand paper to take the glaze off of them . Many times this will reduce or eliminate squeeky or howling brakes .

Also, make sure your rotor is centered in the caliper. I've gotten a bit of humming in the past when the caliper is slightly offset one way or the other.

Edit: Oh, and 'howl', I assume.

Wow, I thought this was another thread about a GF frame breaking and him having to haul it out of the woods.

I have the same frame, with the carbon stays. Rear brake is similarly quiet as with my other bikes.

If your caliper was not parallel in the frame, after some riding, the brake pads are now worn in such a fashion that you really can't have the caliper parallel and it will brake quietly. You'll need to buy new pads and start over. As a cheap fix you can take out your pads and sand them down so that the pad surfaces are nice and even and try again.

in the past when I've had problems with either the front or rear brakes making noises I've swapped pads between the front and rear and it always solves the problem.

You are not alone on this one. My HiFi 29er did the same thing after 3-4 months. What a pain in the ass. It would vibrate the whole frame. It was to the point where I didn't touch the rear brake at all. The bike came with Juicy 7's, when I changed the pads it went away for a couple of weeks riding, but then the noise/vibration came back. I did all sorts of things, cleaned the rotor, adjusted the caliper, retorqued the suspension linkage, etc. The LBS had a look at it but nothing fixed it, the mechanic said he has never seen or felt anything like it. I changed to Formula R1's in July this year and so far so good. What brakes do you have on your bike?

If it is a Juicy brake system, look in the Brakes Forum and go to the last few pages of the Turkey Gobble thread...huge thread, can't miss it. Maybe you need a fishing weight and some double-stick tape. It cured my issues, or at least masked them.

On a GF 29er, BREAK might be the right word.

When my GF frame brakes I would prefer if you would just howl me out of the woods.

Brakes...yeah my 2008 HiFi 29er sounds like a flock of geese after about 2 -3 months with new pads....I just change them out several times a year. I used to use alcohol but was told there are too many additives in the stuff you buy at the drug store. What has actually worked the best is to find a trail with lots of gritty mud and brake a lot, it must wear the pads down and break up any oil??

Break....yup....done that too...chainstays. Love the Fisher warranty....although I'm starting to think I need an additional HiFi as a replacement so when one goes bad I don't lose any riding time.

Love the way the bike feels, it climbs well but can be just a bit flexy in the rear. The HiFi in my opinion is a XC bike and if you are going to use it for anything more even light all mountain, than expect breakage issues.

All that being said I would buy one again and have put well over 4000 miles on the bike in the last 2 years and many of those were hard miles.

There are a number of reviews out there on the 2010 HiFi and Rumble Fish 29ers and I believe the 2010 models have had the rear triangle redisigned to elminate the breakage issues.

Guitar Ted did a write up on both bikes and seemed to like them both.

Check out those reviews here.

Finally it’s fixed.
The rear clamp was changed and… no more noise.
Thanks for all the cyclists who wrote (seriously) ,I respect any cyclist, no matter what he rides and think that comments about “cheap sh.., eastern that” are out of place, I know it sounds crazy but you can even learn from cyclist with//bad English.

What "clamp" are you referring to? Skewer?
