650B AM wheelset -- don't see good options...

bummer. as part of my quest to needlessly spend money on a wider quiver of bikes, i looked into building a custom steel hardtail frame to run w/ my existing extra parts build kit (which includes a Lyrik fork) and some 650b wheels I'd build around an extra set of hadleys.

this would be a sub-30 lb hardtail, with a 160 (or 150) mm thru axle fork, short chainstays; no freeride abuse but would see some drops to tranny.

musts, in my book, would be to have rims with at least 21 mm inner width, and tubeless on the rear since I don't want to run a DH rear tire (or tube) to avoid pinch flats. stan's does not offer a 650b Flow rim, AFAIK. i'm not impressed w/ the low quality of the blunt rims. the new velocity rim (p35 or whatever it's called) is a bit heavy for this application. the 26 inch nevegal is sort of a pain to run tubeless, and i assume the 27.5 version is as well. the neomoto bead is a sloppy fit on most rims, accordign to threads here, so that's out.

does this mean i need to wait another year or so before building an AM 650b hardtail? am i overlooking some good tubeless, wide rim but not heavy wheelset options?

Sun EQ27 w/ a 2.35 Neo.

WTB is supposed to have the LaserDisc Trail out sometime...hopefully before 2012.

The Vicious Cycles COTR rim might be the ticket for you. Here's a thread about it:

And a link to it:

dood -- just because many mtbr's don't know what they are talking about does not mean all the posters here are clueless. are your posts useless? and FWIW, i have spoken to 650b riders who've griped about the lack of good wide-rim tubeless setups currently available. if you have info the contrary, feel free to provide it.

if you owned 5 bikes, and were considering dropping 1200 or so on a custom frame for your first 650b bike but did not this to turn into an expensive and unsuccessful experiment, would you ask around (on the forums and in real life) regarding build kit options or would you just fly blind and drop $$$ on some random rims and tires, hoping they'd work out?

I don't think the P35 is really that heavy, and it has definitely got the grip on any 650B tire for tube or tubeless mode. It grips the NeoMoto like a UST fit IMO. If you want real AM...and with a 150/160mm fork it sounds like you do...then go with the P35.

Just out of curiosity, what are you considering "too heavy"?

A sub-30 lb hardtail with 160mm of travel and thru axels and you are worried about a few grams worth of rim weight?

The P35 is the only and best option for you, when it is finally available. Wide, tubeless, and durable. Tires.......Neo 2.3. Love'em. I run mine tubeless. I wouldn't call it a sloppy fit by any means on my ZTR, but the ZTR isn't a rim you'd be interested in for this build.

I'm pretty sure the P35 is available already isn't it?

And then you've got the Sun Equalizer too.

thks for the inputs on the P35. I thought I read somewhere that these would be avail in October...do we know when they will be available?

regarding build weight -- the solo air lyrik is fairly light, lighter than my coil pike. really not much point to building this bike if the weight comes out higher than 30 lbs. my 2X9 nomad2/lyrik is about 31 lbs with a wide, strong wheelset + fat tires, 1.5 stem and headset, etc.. don't want quiver overlap.

on a side note, with the low weight 160mm forks and frames available these days, 160 is the xc/am sweet spot for most of the trails i ride. so while i'm not going to be a weight nazi on the wheelbuild, i'm not going to ignore it either.

Martini gave me a quote based around the p35s a week ago - so they are available I'm pretty sure - I think you are just limited to black rims for the time being. Just guessin.

thanks, i'll look into the p35s. the nominal weight of 570 g is very reasonable given the big width. and the claimed tubeless (conversion w/ rubber strip? or just stan's yellow tape?) suitability is another plus.

other than the 2.35 nevegal, and the neomoto, any other tires to consider?

I'm 230 nekid so with my 5" bike and gear that's 270+ rolling. The EQ27s have been just fine for two well used seasons routinely going to hell and back and no issues. Hadley Rims, DT Comp spokes 14g. Hope it helps...

Thanks,
Andre

I have all-coloured p35s in stock, so they should be available where you are .. I'm UK based though so if you're in the US, best keep looking
