Why does my right wrist hurt?

I've been cycling for about a month now, and notice that of my both wrists, only my right one hurts. Does this occur to anybody else? Any idea what the cause of this is? It seems like this happens to some other members on a local bike forum too, but nobody really has a solution for it.

Maybe your handlebars bars are too wide? My wrists used to hurt until I went to a narrower bar.

Plus 1 on too wide of bars. Also check lever positioning too. You are likely shifting more with your RH and if the shifter is at an awkward angle you're tweaking your hand/wrist to complete shifts.

Might not be the bike to blame. Maybe excess masturbation or PC mouse use has lead to a RSI.

Nerve irritation , try different grips , different bar , diffrerent bar sweep , different stem rise , or all the above . Start with grips , larger diameter might help . Ergon grips have worked for alot of people . Good luck .

being right handed and have nothing to do when you not biking and at home one internet? If that is the cause dont eat cheetos at the same time, Its not supposed to be orange.

hey! check the lever positioning as stated above. adjust brake levers and shifters position so that when you are standing on the pedals while riding, and grabbing the levers, your wrists are straight and in line with your forearms. you should still be able to work the controls comfortably while sitting. the tendancy is to make the adjustment while sitting. this puts an upward strain on the wrist when standing. fun on!

the adjustment suggestions above are all good. is it only hurting in a particular position? death grip? start with adjusting your body first maybe. Hand, elbow, shoulders, etc. attention to when and where the pain goes away or increases then adjust the component accordingly. rinse and repeat...til it's not orange anymore! (sorry but it was a little funny) good luck though.

my guess is a combination of riding the rear brake and poor brake set up.

You know you have a real problem if your wrist hurts when rotating, like turning a door knob. If you place your palm under a desk or table and push up like you're lifting it, you've likely injured the TFCC, which is a part of the inner wrist that never really heals on its own. I hurt mine bmxing, and it hasn't felt the same for about a year now. It just happened while I was riding one day. I didn't really think anything of it until it didn't go away. I'm not even sure how it happened. You probably just need to make some adjustments to your bike and you'll be good to go, but it sucks if it's the TFCC. I don't want to scare you or anything. It's just something to check.

My experience is the opposite. I used to get wrist strain with more narrow bars - usually when muscling up some rock step-up when climbing. That pain went away when I started using wider bars. I think the wide bars put me in a more ergonomic position where my wrist and forearm are straight. Narrow bars cause my wrist to be more angled. This is also accentuated with a shorter stem - a longer stem reduces the angle of my wrist.

Lol. Thanks for the tips guys. Actually I felt that my handle bar was too narrow, and it might be slightly tilted too far forward for my liking. Also, it seemed like trying to learn bunny hops didn't help the wrist one bit.

It might be hairline fracture, its like light surface cracks to the bone; I use to get it as well when I was riding a stiff ass cr-mo BMX. It takes a long time to heal and in fact makes your bones stronger in the long run. This is a common injury and most people that I know that have this do just fine while they continue to ride during the times of pain, me included.

The other night I saw something in related to this on discovery and it was said that some of the more mobile Dinosaurs (think T-rex)have signs of this too and it was proven with another lizard on a treadmill that they developed the same signs after spending hours on the thing over a few months. It also formed tubular structures in the bones that were previously only noticed in mammals (how’s that for a hot fact)?

getting a wrist brace helps. I had a sharp pain for a couple of weeks. The brace helps reduce pain for sure.

When I switched handlebars at the beggining of last year I had wristp ains. I knew my brake levers and shifters we're correctly positionned so instead of rotating those, I rotated the whole bar and replaced the levers at the same orientation. It helped. The wrist pain came in later during the ride. So I rotated the bar again and eventually found the sweet spot.

Of course if you have no bend and rise on your bar, don't bother...

And learning to bunnyhop on a rigid will kill your wrists. I know, when I started riding trials, I developed severe wrist pains!!! Of course that road crash last year didn't help and still today, even if they don't hurt, both my wrists crack on demand

If your bars are tilted too far forward, the sweep can put your wrists in an ackward position.
Maybe try tilting them more towards your body, then make sure your levers are inline with your forearms while you are on the bike.
Maybe your right brake lever is slightly more upward than the left.
I work on bikes all day and it would amaze you how many bikes come in with the brake levers pointing straight forward....which means you are bending your wrists up to put your fingers on the levers.

Hey Everyone -

I was having the same issue with my right wrist..... It was because of the shifter & brake leaver set up I was using!! I moved them and all is better now!

I agree that you should check your setup and make sure you are in a natural position and you are not moving your wrists out of position to operate the controls.

On bikes and motorcycles it is a common problem to squeeze the grips too hard. This often happens if you have anxiety. Watch how much you squeeze over technical sections, climbing, and drops. Your right wrist may be impacted more because you have stronger muscles in that arm (aforementioned reasons ).

I'll definitely be giving this a shot on Tuesday when I get my new bike setup. I find it strange that although the shifters/levers/handlebars and everything else is positioned exactly the same on the left side, my left wrist doesn't hurt one bit.
