Taking 'trail dogs' to a new level

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFP28ANXLLA

This is world class dog musher Heini Winter free running 16 sled dogs on a mountain bike- through streets even! They look like 'eurohounds', which are performance bred German Shorthaired Pointer/Greyhound/perhaps alaskan husky crosses.

FWIW these dogs can make VERY nice pets for active people IMO. They tend to be athletic (obviously), fast learners, cooperative, healthy, long lived, and are specifically bred to be very non aggressive since they have to be handled by so many people and live/work with so many other dogs.

Neighborhood cats may not be so enthused however, lol.

awesome, i love seeing this - i am VERY PROUD that my red heeler behaves as good as these dogs...she responds to hand movements and to the snap of my fingers as these dogs do. Some breeds are just smart and don't take much training in order to do the right thing.

Good video. I didn't think I would watch all 9 minutes of it, but I did. I would have like to see them pass the horse that turned off the trail. Looked like the locals were used to him, therre didn't seem to be any strange looks.

Wow. Wish my two bostons would do that. I've spent 3 years training them so they sort of walk ok on a leash. But if they see another dog, squirrel, person or anything else I've got a problem.

I seriously hate dogs on trails, especially when not on a leash but those dogs seem to obey very well. He's done a good job of training them!

Wow! What a well behaved group of dogs (and they all look so healthy). This puts to shame those folks I've seen over the years who have no control over their one dog on the trail.

Interesting

My dog does all that with no prompting.

Gotta love the joy in that pack of dogs, how cool! They obviously are strongly bonded to their leader. Says a lot about the guy and his dogs.

Sounds like an ideal biking dog, thanks for the link.

LOL... open class sled doggin' is about as crazy as DH... Only massively dirtier, and doesn't have nearly the sex appeal.

Gotta go run my 2 skijor hounds on a scooter now. They're yowling and won't shut up because they know we're headed out. Here's hoping for a clean run, no pesky deer, and NO SKUNKS!

my dog got in a turf war with a deer. they just stood there one stepped forwards the other would step back for like 20 mins until i got Bord and chased the deer away. its kinda funny because my dog is 20 pounds and a deer is a couple hundred.

thats great! except most you people are not intelligent enough to keep your dog under control on the trail, leave your dogs at home or expect trouble I will confront you if you are on a leash only trail or you do not have your dog under control on a designated trail

the people next door to my house have a border collie its blind but still can tell were you are. as for my dog i got her right after 9/11 her owner died in the trade center and she was beaten. she has issues with people she doesn't know and when you leave the house for the day with out her. she will stay within 2 ft of you all day. if she sees a suit case she sleeps on it to make sure you don't forget her. after all that thought she knows i saved her, she had like three day before they put her down, and she is really sweet. it really sad the point her last owner brought her to, you cant more your hand fast or she will cower and new people cant even look at her or she get scared and hides behind me. why would some one do that to a animal.

agreed, i was reading about a fox hunting dog incident were they would take all the puppies out to train them and if they got lost tough luck they didn't look for them. some animal cruelty group went out there and found a pack of like 100 plus dogs that were abandon. but any way adopted/rescued/found dogs are the best dogs because they appreciate you.

border collies are popular in Idaho, they do the work of 6 men when herding sheep,it is wide open country here and easy to get lost I do not fault some Peruvian sheepherder for losing track of Bess, these dogs cost $50.00 dollars and look like mutts to the untrained eye and she certainly hasa good home now, we cherish her.

are they really that good for herding. my teacher has a pitbull that herds cows, and its the most well trained friendly dog you will ever meet. but it can only handle like three cows.

I liked when the whole pack broke up and went wild in the field, but one dog was content to just run along side the bike. Made me miss my old dog.

Thanks for the idle threats, and letting us know that the majority of us are irresponsible dog owners. This thread really needed that.

Dogs and bikes, it just works out pretty much perfect. I do slow down a bit and take more breaks. Bodi is up to about eight miles. Eats a lot more dog food after a ride.

Yeah, I just get tired of people who know nothing about dogs shooting their mouths off about how no dog is ever good enough to run loose.
"Trail conflict summed up." Guess this applies to dog haters as well as bike haters!

"Jacob and Schreyer (1980) considered tolerance for lifestyle diversity (the tendency to accept or reject lifestyles different from one’s own) to be a major factor in whether conflict would exist."

Wow, he has really good control of his dogs. They all looked really healthy and in decent shape. However, at the beginning of the video when they passed another off leash dog. If it had been my dog, his pack woulda been broken up.

Hey sexytime I found my dog out in a wilderness area too, go figure! He was being chased by the biggest cat I've ever seen, the sissy. I usually obey the leash laws but even when I don't no one ever confronts me, kind of strange! Here's a pic of me & Spot returning from a nice long hike. Hope we see ya out on the trail sometime! Take care bro!
