Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Busted: I fought the law and the law gave me a warning.

I got busted riding an illegal trail that technically isn't a trail. "It is an off limits area that has been destoyed by mountainbikers, but you don't really care," gasped Ranger Rick.

It figures that I would have the greatest day at my favorite trail, and get caught in the act. I got caught elbow deep snatching up the last cookie in the cookie jar. With a smile from ear to ear, I rolled up on Ranger Rick digging a hole for the new "no Mountain Bikers" sign.

To be honest he was an OK guy. Ran my license, and asked me if I knew the trail was illegal. Ahhh well, it's not on the map. He gave me a warning and said that next time it will cost me $300 and to tell all my friends.

So friends, if you are thinking about riding your favorite poacher trail that allows you to find some solace in this crazy world, don't do it. Douchbags spend $80,000 on their cars and $5000 on their watches...which can't even touch the pleasure I get from my trail. So, I say pay to play. I can support the California budget, California's Nat'l Parks all by doing the thing that I love the most. Win Win.

Obviously wasn't MidPen lands, as they would have only given you the warning...

Yeah, thanks for the tip. The main reason I don't ride such trails is the potential costs. Now which trail is this anyway?

That's pretty much been my MO. I've been ticketed 3 times in 17 years, totalling about $700. Do the math; that's a good deal!

It would be helpful to have pics of line selection, jumps and drops to stay away from.

Last time I was preaching pay to play; it was about 3 mins before I dropped my favorite trail, i got my one and only ticket ever on the trail. Now I dont say shiz I just ride and pray. That seems to be working.
But I agree it I would pay to play anyday of the week as long as it is not everyday.

Did he really say that? I wonder if he was also ticketing hikers/runners on this trail that doesn't exist since we see them on it all the time. I kinda thought the Rangers were turning a blind eye to it since it really is pretty blatant and wouldn't take much to just sit there at the bottom and hand out tickets. Oh well. I wonder if some of the new stuff resulted in increased attention? Maybe if we weren't pushed out of 90% of the park there wouldn't be a need for said trail. Maybe not...

Sincerely,
Your partner in crime

Instead of "No Bikes" shouldn't the sign have said "No Trail"? Or do they allow hikers and horses to go "off trail/cross country"

Nope. Guess again Sherlock. Mr. Frog had the thoughtfulness not to post the name or location of said illegal trail, so why are you doing it?

People asked for information.

It's right there in his profile where he thoughtfully posted the name and location of his favorite trail.

Actually, I was much more concerned with a trail in Marin, that kind of sounds similar a word that he used in his post ("solace").

So I checked his profile to see if he was a Marin local and found his "favorite poacher trail."

Assuming the OP was legit, the ranger did ask him/her to tell all his friends... No reason to keep it hidden.

Why do you think the police tell the media and everyone where the DUI checkpoints are? Knowing they are out there enforcing is more of a deterrent / effective than just having the checkpoint itself.

well, i did before i realized you're one of "those"- a stem breaker.

there's room for the wife and kid though. she's not a stem breaker is she? you're not raising the little one to be a stem breaker are you?

but honestly, lots of room here. hammocks in the back yard, koi pond. come visit. bring tubes and lots of stans.

i going to do backpacking sushi in two weeks in the superstition mountains. dry ice, some bubble wrap and a big pack. its a group of outdoor folks with a focus on backcountry cooking. rumor is we have a journalist coming who splits her time between Gourmet and Backpacking magazine- so maybe I'll be famous (aside from the adult movie business that is).

Dearest Mailboxes,

Oh Mailboxes, it was so long ago, we were so young. My mind brings me back to the first time. I was in a pair of camo cargos, etnies, and a T shirt, riding a borrowed bike. You were so young, natural, smooth, and fast.

At first I didn't know what to expect. I had been with Missionary Peak back in my hometown but you were so much more. You had obviously done this before. You saw the fear and weakness in my eyes, but you did not expose me. You embraced me, pushing me to go faster. Time stood still; my mind could not process the ecstasy that I was experiencing. Then, over the edge, no longer in my hands, fear was not an option. Then we were one. I couldn't tell where I ended and you started. You were my first love.

We continued to see each other regularly for months. I moved to be closer to you. Any chance to get away, I rode to you. I got to know every curve, all the little idiosyncrasies that made you, you. I knew you could never be only mine so I went out to experience other trails.

I have matured since our time together. I have gotten to know many new tails. Riding them over and over always pushing myself to go harder and bigger. I have become a trail whore. I can only feel exhilaration if I am racing, or shooting video of my conquests. It used to be so pure, now it has become so complex. I have no soul, only the desire to have my way with every trail I come in contact with. I now find myself calling all of the trails I ride my favorite.
I have been found out. I now must come clean. I was not talking of you then when I spoke of my favorite poacher trail. Only when it was brought out in the open could I see the truth.

I have had many very special times with many different trails, but you Mailboxes are my first, my last, my everything.

E.F.

I saw a ranger out the other day too, he was planting signs too. He was on his mountain bike, he was planting signs showing you where the trails were and what the names were. He used the bike to pack his saws and loppers so that he could cut the brush out of the over grown trails. I was out doing a bit of trail maintenance too. It was a good day.

So glad I live here and not wherever it is you law breakers live.
