Pedal!!

My mentor left this on my desk this morning.

He used to do a lot of cycling when he was younger...so he really identified with it too...

------------------------------------------------------------------

The Road of Life -- author unknown

At first, I saw God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the things I did wrong, so as to know whether I merited heaven or hell when I die.

He was out there sort of like a president.

I recognized His picture when I saw it, but I really didn't know Him.

But later on when I met Christ, it seemed as though life was rather like a bike ride, but it was a tandem bike, and I noticed that Christ was in the back helping me pedal.

I don't know just when it was that He suggested we change places, but life has not been the same since.

When I had control, I knew the way. It was rather boring, but predictable . . .It was the shortest distance between two points.

But when He took the lead, He knew delightful long cuts, up mountains, and through rocky places at breakneck speeds, it was all I could do to hang on!

Even though it looked like madness, He said, "Pedal!"

I worried and was anxious and asked, "Where are you taking me?"

He laughed and didn't answer, and I started to learn to trust.

I forgot my boring life and entered into the adventure.

And when I'd say, "I'm scared," He'd lean back and touch my hand.

He took me to people with gifts that I needed, gifts of healing, acceptance and joy.

They gave me gifts to take on my journey, my Lord's and mine.

And we were off again.

He said, "Give the gifts away; they're extra baggage, too much weight."

So I did, to the people we met, and I found that in giving I received, and still our burden was light.

I did not trust Him, at first, in control of my life.

I thought He'd wreck it; but He knows bike secrets, knows how to make it bend to take sharp corners, knows how to jump to clear high rocks, knows how to fly to shorten scary passages.

And I am learning to shut up and pedal in the strangest places, and I'm beginning to enjoy the view and the cool breeze on my face with my delightful constant companion, Jesus Christ.

And when I'm sure I just can't do anymore,

He just smiles and says . . . "Pedal."

The scourging of the FSM would have been a real mess too...

...and imagine trying to nail a spaghetti ball to a cross...like...

...maybe like "nailing Jello to a wall"?

Hey BikeCO..Just watch Part 1 of the movie. I see that you are definitely one of the faithful but please just watch Part 1 and please let me know if you can disprove anything they are saying. There might be some disrepancies but I just don't like to see people eating up everything their "religion" tells them. If Jesus works for you that is fine but it is always good to know where the stories come from. The story of "Jesus" or the son of god, etc.. is older than you know and the current one that is popular here in the west and elsewhere is just the most current version.

I watched about the first 40 minutes last night...all the way through the description of how the global money machine works (I taught most of this in a round table discussion for Social Studies last week...talking about the current global economic crisis) and into the testimonies of the so-called "economic hitmen".

...at that point it starts to sound like some good old fashioned "conspiracy theory" stuff. But...I do realize there are HUGE undercurrents of these kinds of things powering most every element of society, culture, economics, government...even (shhhhh!)...religion.

I'll keep watching...though I have yet to get to the part about "religion". Looking forward to hearing what the movie says...and talking more about it.

Make sure your watching the bottom one which is the real movie and not the 'addendum."
The addendum is just about the econonomics and quasi conspiracy theories.

Right on...I HAVE seen this before...well, I have seen about ten minutes of it, but I didn't realize it was called "The Zeitgeist Movie"...so I didn't make the connection.

I'll go through a few points and we can see if I'm a total nut job or not.

Cool?

Hey bikeCO, thumbs up for keeping an open mind, regardless of the overall view point. Most "faithful" are pretty closed minded and impossible to have a conversation with on these matters.

I've know bikeCO to be so open-minded the darned thing fell out once or twice. It's not the mind of bikeCO you need to be worried about, it's the hind end. That thing is freakin' wicked and that' no conspiracy theory.

I've watched the zeitgeist flick before, yesterday in fact. There are a lot of holes in the Religion section that are definitely worthy of discussion.

Good board over here in CO-Fr Range, the ID board would've erupted in mass chaos and revolt and they would've come to my house with torches and pitchforks to kill the ogre. You kids over here get a standing ovation.

I've made it 4 minutes into the movie (it's two hours long?) and I've typed up about two pages of notes...hang in there with me - I really want to take the time to dig in deep with you on this conversation.

I'm not the type to say "....uh...well...it's just so because the Bible says it's so and that's why you are wrong..." and then walk away thinking I've somehow proven my point.

This will...and should take me some time so hang in there as I watch and dig. Thanks.

Very interesting and compelling arguments, the part about the story of Jesus makes a lot of sense, but I'm more interested in hearing thoughts on the 9/11 part. The smaller 3rd tower coming down in the manner it did sure raises some valid questions, and the twin towers, I remember how most people were in disbelief that they came down in the manner they did when it happened, hmmm.

Update...I'm about 17 minutes into the movie. The "introduction" is 15 minutes long! I apologize that this is taking a while...but I do hope you appreciate that I'm not simply blowing it off, I am taking some serious time to dig into what you have posted.

The issues isn't whether some guy named J.C. was bumming around Palestine 2000 years ago, but whether he had super powers . . . like Spiderman.

There is no God. People that thought they saw him were on drugs. The bible was written by ancient hippies.

When was the last time you saw a bunch of drugged out hippies write a book? They can barely get the motivation to make a MickyD's run.
And they didn't have meth in 0 AD.

William Burroughs wrote books, and Hunter S. Thompson wrote a lot. All the Beats were doped up, and name one writer that didn't have some kind of substance abuse problem.

Each of those churches show certain books, which they call revelation, or the word of God. The Jews say, that their word of God was given by God to Moses, face to face; the Christians say, that their word of God came by divine inspiration: and the Turks say, that their word of God (the Koran) was brought by an angel from Heaven. Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all.
-T. Paine

...and now we have Dobsons of the world trying to tell us how we should live our lives by promoting legislation to make more things illegal because THEY think that we all need saving. I'm not saying that religion has not done good things for some people but more death and suffering has been caused on this planet in the name of religion and I just think it is time for people to open their eyes to it.

Very sorry for the hijack...ride on.

They "imagine" he's divine. I admit a guy named JC may have existed, not that he was god.

People don't see JC at Walmart, they make themselves believe they see him whereever they wish. E.g. http://www.local6.com/news/15875360/detail.html

Do you not see a face in the picture? I saw a face right away. Whether someone wants to believe it is JC is their prerogative. Why do you care if they believe it is JC?

As far as whether he is/was divine! Can you prove he is not divine? NO you can't. I can't prove that he is. Do some people take it too far? Sure they do. Humans love to tell people what to do and how to live. But that's why we have laws against murder and rape and stealing and why we have to wear seatbelts. And everyone over 18 gets a vote to decide what should be legal or not. And their votes might be driven by their belief in some religion. Ain't that America! Freedom of speech and freedom of belief!

Look at Al Gore, he flies around in Jets and has huge homes and has a security entourage that drive in large SUV's. But he is champion of the environment. If he was a religious leader he would be chastized to no end as a hypocrit. But his message is right on IMO. We do need to protect the environment. But most like to hate the message because they hate the messenger. I know I can't stand him!
Same with Islam, It's supposed to be a religion of peace and tolerance but for centuries it has been twisted by others and they murder others endlessly.
I know Atheists think that the world would be better off without any religion. But I highly doubt it.
Humans will always find reasons to kill each other. Period. Without laws and accountability, humans run amuck. The fact that the majority of this world choose to believe that there is some higher power that will judge them by their actions in life is probably better that naught.
But your welcome to the contrary!
But ask yourself one question! When you are on your deathbed and you know you have seconds left. Will you hope that God exists? Or that he doesn't exist?

I don't care what others think so long as they don't impose those beliefs on me. As a silly example, you can believe that a magical unicorn is pushing you up the hills on your bike, if you with, as long as it doesn't affect me, and you don't make me register my own unicorn at the race and pay its entry fee, whatevs. However, there are few instances in history in which people have let their beliefs not affect how they treat others, often based on others' agreement or disagreement with those beliefs. Religion is just an interesting, occasionally inspiring but often sad and disheartening aspect of human nature.

What's Obama going to do? He's going to impose things like socialized health care, Higher taxes on the rich. AutoMaker bailouts. People are imposing these things because they "believe" that is right. Wake up and smell the reality. Everybody imposes their beliefs on others. Some people say you can't spank your kids and you need to wear your seatbelt (a law). In CO, you have to wear your seatbelt but do not need to wear a motorcycle helmet????
Some impose their belief that they should be able to have an abortion and some impose that it should be illegal. In some municipalities you have to register your dog and you are just a "guardian" to it!
Aren't you glad someone imposed their belief to society that murder was illegal or that you can't go out and rape someone at will? Don't you think some women in the middle east hope that someone "imposes" to their men not to kill them for walking outside not wearing their burka?
Lot's of people "believe" that mountain bikes should not be allowed in certain forest areas. And they push that agenda on others. It's rampant and it's everywhere.

And some people, when they read a "religious" post try to push their disbelief of that notion. And vice-versa!
Face it, It's everywhere and the only time someone gets bent out of shape is when they disagree with what is said.
Here is a great quote about our society!
America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

America, Love it or Leave it! or push your agenda through the political process!

So I'll ask the question again! Do you see a face in the photo you linked?

I can say Bike CO and I probably don't agree on religion (hell I was raised by a catholic father and jewish mother, clearly I'll have some issues with religion), but I will say anyone willing to stick their faith out there and work to intelligently defend it is a good person, and maybe at the end of the day that is what faith is about.

On to the movie, watched it this summer and to me there are so many "leaps of faith" and unproven theories it isn't worth much effort.

The Zeitgiest Response - Part 01

The Zeitgeist "Challenge"...

The Zeitgeist Challenge...My response...Part 1

...BTW...religion disgusts me too. I hope I never represent myself to anyone as "religious"...or "religulous"!

As I've said before...religion hates, religion condemns, religion kills, religion is what got Jesus killed - faith heals, faith reconciles, faith loves, faith saves.

See the link above for my response...too much formatting and embedded links for reference to post it here.

It's funny how closeminded the s'posedly "open-minded" folks can be when it comes to God and faith.

Great OP, very cool!

I see a fundamental distinction between setting forth your ideas/beliefs based on the impacts on society and setting forth your ideas/beliefs base don your philosophical view of human nature and the divine. For the the prior is fine for politics, but not the latter.

I see what could be the image of a face. It looks like what could be construed to be a face similar to the Europeanized face of what I have been taught J.C. was supposed to look like (even though the historical figure was most likely an ethnic Palestinian or Middle Easter person and much darker without the Gallic nose). Such images no doubt appear all over, in large part because we look for what we want to see. We’ve all seen things in clouds. However, it is not a face of god. It's a bunch of light refracting.

Moderator? Can we please move this to the socio-political-religious forum? No offense intended.

Men trying to turn "faith" into their own thing, by more laws, lists of rules, traditions, etc...that is what turns "faith" into "religion". It is very difficult to avoid and something I try not to fall into...but I do as well. That's why it is so important to me to focus on Jesus...and nothing else...which of course...I fail at, but it's my goal.

If this discussion becomes disrespectful...then it ought to be deleted. The Soc/Pol/Rel forum is no more...so please leave this thread alive. And if you don't like the discussion...kindly look elsewhere and let us discuss freely and respectfully.

And therein lies the crux of the matter! You feel they are separate or should be. But you seem to have been taught Judeo Christian beliefs at sometime in your life and now have decided that religion has no place for you now. But it is a chicken or the egg kind of situation. And one we can argue ad nauseum.
Do your morals and values come from a lack of christian religious ethics or did you have exposure to these notions as a child?
Were you brought up in a Christian family and they taught you these beliefs or did you just learn them naturally?
What hypocrisy did you experience in your own life that has led you to be a nonbeliever?
Most people I meet who truly despise religion, when pressed, will relay a story of where God did not respond to them or fix a tragedy in their lives. Or their parents preached religion while being hypocritical about their own lives.

You state there is a fundamental difference pushing your beliefs based on impacts to society and not for one's religious beliefs. I believe that that distinction is a utopian concept that does not exist and never will. We all are products of our upbringing and experiences. Those experiences good and bad shape our decisions about what we feel is important for society. To say religious beliefs shouldn't have a bearing on these choices is a bit idealistic because no one can determine where we get our love of the environment or why we feel that life is precious. A personal mentor could be teaching you based on their religious beliefs but never actually state so. So you become a product of those beliefs unknowingly!

But you are entitled to your opinion, If you really believe that the morals and charity in our society could exist without Religion, thats your right to believe it. I cannot prove you wrong, I can only debate to the contrary. The same way you cannot prove that the image seen in the hospital is not the face of Christ. You can only state your opinion that you "believe" it is not.

BC, this is obviously a MTB forum, specifically for CO front range, so IMO it is disrespectful to perhaps a majority of the intended audience. I'm only suggesting the discourse should be had elsewhere. Thanks.

Good stuff!! When is Part 2 coming along?? I have watched the movie a while back but never had the time to investigate all of the theory in there. This is interesting.

I do know that the life of Jesus was documented in other writings including Josephus, a historical writing during the times before, during, and after Jesus' walk here and also he's mentioned in the Koran as a Prophet. The unmistakable proof the the Bible, more so the Hebrew writings of the Old Testament weren't just written by many men, but truly inspired by God the creator, are the Bible Codes that have exposed the very history of the earth as we know it and prove that with God there is no time and he sees it all, past, present, and future. His word contains all of history.....HIS Story.

Take Faith, add truth, and throw in proof and then you have something.

BTW....how's the rides going??

So how do you know the majority finds this disrespectful??? The vast majority of Christians keep quiet for fear of ridicule in public (unfortunate but pretty true in my experience). Most folks who find something distasteful or disrespectful just don't bother with it. If this discussion is causing you trouble why read it and participate?

I'll try to squeeze some more time in this weekend viewing the movie...it is important to me not to simply breeze through it.

Where we are in the discourse started here not intentionally, but as a naturally as any other thread may move from the originally intended topic back and forth to various different topics. There are several interested parties on either side of the "faith" argument involved in this thread and the discussion has remained remarkably level headed and respectful. Would you kindly tolerate this discussion by reading and participating in kind or just by ignoring this thread altogether?
