Shimano M647, Lake MX-165 shoes with Specialized Body Geometry insoles. Very comfortable combo! Same pedals on my hardtail. The shoes are decently stiff for pedaling, but have awesome Vibram shoe tread for those off the bike hoofing it times.

hey man, is that a 150mm or 180mm travis on your preston? what do you think of it? i have a travis 150 that i am going to use for a build. right now i have not decided on whether to build a preston, bottlerocket, or lay down the dough on a heckler. i am leaning towards the BR but havent made up my mind. i have a sherman on my current bike and am very happy with it. are you happy with your decision on the travis?

brokenchain, I'm assuming that question is directed at me, correct? I actually just swapped the 2006 Travis Single 150 out for a 2006 66 Light last weekend. The Travis 150 was a perfect match for my Preston. I don't care what anyone says about Manitou, that fork has held up great and is much more responsive to technical terrain than the 66 is. However, the 66 is much more plush, and probably too much fork for that bike. My Preston feels a little to raked with the 66, but I suspect that a travel reduction will put things back in check. My advice is to rock the Travis 150 on the Preston and a 170+ fork on a BottleRocket. Your geometry will be better off that way. My $0.02.

this is the perfect way to see what bike to go for. i have been torn between the preston and the covert both have their advantages of coarse but seeing scrublover,s pics i think the covert would be sweet. i will thrash my coiler for a while yet and if i dont go any bigger by the end of the year, covert it is. pics are worth a thousand words and what is big for one is small to another. every manufacturers forum should have a thread like this as it might help those confused souls like me. big up for transition and lelebebbel,s masterful idea

We had a happy hour / bbq / urban session at our house last night after work. Me and my buddies steve and Jon (ok, they did most of the work) built a 12' ramp out of 2x4's and some leftover scrap wood from my deck project. We carried the ramp across the park from my house and leaned it on a guard rail. I've been eye balling this potential gap for a long time, but never really had the cajones to hit it. It's about 15 feet to clear the park bench and the little wall.

Last night was the perfect setting and we did a bunch of sessioning on this and another section. A few pics on the GM......the landing was like buttah! Me in the first 3 and Armando on the GM in the last pic.

Make it happen, Nickle.....I certainly feel that riding the steeps takes as much skill (if not more) and cajones as getting some air on the bike.

Nickle, in truth, I've been eyeing up that roadgap for a long while. I just never had the cajones to make it happen.....even with a massively long and buttery-smooth tranny. It's roughly 10+ up and 15+ out, so the speed issue was what I always felt unsure about. Thankfully, my buddy Armando had hit it before me and told me where I needed to lay off the brakes. I just didn't want to short it because it would've been straight to flat.....so, so armed with that info., I gave'r a couple of times and landed it ok. Talk about adrenaline!

I run a fairly stiff spring for my weight (500lb/in spring, 160lb rider w/o gear), so the rear end feels solid and responsive. The whole bike is quick handling, short chainstays and so on, so the short travel suspension is a good match for that.

It can take quite a beating, too, and has saved me more than once after casing or ridiculously overshooting stuff...

I've never tried "actual" dirt jumping on this, but I'd imagine you might want to have air adjustable shock and fork, so you adapt the suspension to trailriding and DJing.

Man, I am going back and forth.... I think I am going to go with the BR, with an '08 36 Talas (or something similar) up front. I just can't help how damn SEXY it is! Anyways, I can just use my MC Rumble when I want to go for a longer trail ride .

The BR is not all that different from a preston. It's a bit heavier, the shock is a bit longer and it has .5" more travel...

the main difference for me was that the large preston comes with a slightly longer seattube. I have long legs. On a large BR, even a 400mm seatpost would hardly be long enough.
I've only tried a BR with a 66 and it was slaaaack (and heavy), but with a 36 it would probably be a good hardcore trailbike as well.

Yeah, I am only 5'8, but most of that is in my torso. My legs are short and stocky , so I can probably get away with the slack ST angle and ride the BR as an EXTREME trailbike. Plus, I figure I can build it up semi-light and force it uphill.

It climbs well if you build it right. Mines at about 33# right now, and it'll claw its way up just about anything.

That's pretty low! What's the spec? I estimated I could probably get my build down to a little over 34, with parts I am pretty confident won't break under my weight (ie thompson, easton, saints). If I got Hones instead of Saints, it would be around 34 on the nose...

Are you sure about the extra travel?

I thought they bumped the Preston up to 5.5 with the longer stroke shock for 2007.

I know the 06 and earlier had 5-4 inches and 1.5 stroke, but that's why I never bought one, cause I would've been slamming that sucker home on every hit.

Anyone confirm this?

I've been on the edge of buying an RFX, but the Preston seems like a slightly better choice as I don't need 6.4' of travel for hardcore riding (long legs ) and the lower BB of the Preston would just destroy turns and steeps on the North Shore.

The '07 Preston gets 120mm (4.72") out of a 2" stroke shock. That's a change from the older ones, which had either 100mm (3.94") or 120mm of travel from a 1.5" stroke shock.

Even though it's not over 5 inches, the ratio should make for good bottom out resistance with a ROCO or DHX on there.

The RFX is a sweet ride and I don't think you'd regret getting either one. I had an '06 and sold it for an '07 Preston. These are two very different bikes in my opinion. The differences are really in leverage ratio and geometry. My RFX had a 3:1 (I believe the '07 is somewhere around 2.8:1) leverage ratio, and even though I am not a super heavy guy I thought it "wallowed" in the beginning of it's travel. In contrast, the Preston is very tight and springy so to speak. Honestly, I think the near 5" of travel is fine for most situations.

The geometry of the two frames is also very different. The Preston sits lower, has shorther chainstays, a shorter TT and more upright SA all while keeping a similar HA. For me, this is very noticeable on the climbs as I can stay on the front of the bike better, even with a tall fork. The Preston is noticeably more stable in corners and easier to maneuver.

As I said, you'd likely be happy with either one. The RFX is a great ride. I think DT made some good moves in the '07 with a slightly shorter TT and slightly more upright SA. I love the bushings and zerk fittings of the Turner, and like Transition, DT is very good with the customer service. The RFX is lighter, but there are some guys giving it some serious abuse and so far it has held up. I would definitely say that the RFX is more XC/trail oriented though.

dont want too ruin your day eb xtreme but i need to jack for answers, will be brief.

hardtails are better-how do the dt 5.1's hold up. i got pro 2's and when i rebuild i was tinkin bout 5.1's. also how do you rate the rampages(riding minion 2.5 single front and high roller 2.5 single back-want something around 2.35/2.4), i have read mixed things.
lelebebbel-i seen your pics so i know you are using your z1 well and i am considering the z1 and domain u-turn. how does the z1 hold up to drops and heavy landings, most of your pics are to trannies and i am a heavy lander at the mo. i have posted to get feedback on the z1 as enough of an upgrade to a pike but no real answers. i am 185lb without gear will the z1 need firmer spring so i can check availablity before i by the fork.

I havn't had the DTs very long, but they're doing well so far. They built up easily, and are still round and dead on true.

I'm quite unimpressed with the Rampage as a front tire. It just dosn't have the cornering bite that I'm looking for. I tried it as a rear for the first time today, and it seemed pretty good. It seems pretty durable, but dosn't corner nearly as well as many other tires out there, such as the Nevegal, High Roller or Minion.

what do you mean with "how does it hold up?"

It came with too little oil in it so it bottomed out easy, but the bottom out resistance is easily tunable by adding oil. I have it dialed in ok now, which means it uses it's travel well and only bottoms out on hard flat hits. Unfortunately, that has happened quiet a bit lately (overshooting stuff).
I don't think a heavier spring is available. There is only one coil spring, the right leg is air, so the spring rate is adjustable over a pretty wide range.

If you mean "how does it hold up" in terms of not breaking, I can only say that it isn't broken yet, and I've had a few crashes on this bike that must've been very hard on the fork. It's pretty solid if you ask me.
