575 Vs Trance 2
Hi guys, looking for advice from all of you with experience of the 575. The 575 looks sweet, no questions. Just wondering whether would be a good move from my current Trance 2. The Trance is plush, climbs very well, and handles great but just outgrown the 4" travel now. Reign seems porky (32+lbs) in weight when the 575 can seemingly be easily built to around 28lbs. Love the maestro system and just a bit nervous of the single-pivot 575 design. Do you all reckon the 575 would be a good buy?
Any help you guys can give me would be great.
Also what's a good fork for it for aggressive XC riding??

I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the 575, but I'll give you my experience to this point. I've owned the bike now for about 6 weeks, but I was riding a buddies full time for about 5 months prior. I came off a 22lb hardtail and I never thought anything would be quicker. The 575 surprised me though. It does have alot of rear travel, but it doesn't feel sloppy at all. In fact, I was able to clean a portion of my local trail w/ the 575, that I was never able to do with the hard tail. It has something to do the with the design and the linear travel of the fork hitting a sweet spot at the right point, etc., etc.(I'll let one of the other guys explain that!) I actually saw the single pivot design as a strong point, Yeti evidently feels the same way since they put a 5 year warranty on the frame. I have read where other riders deal alot w/ bearing replacement/maintenance, but I haven't read of anyone have problems here. As for front fork I have a Marz Z1 SL w/ 150mm travel. I have it set it w/ a lot of sag so it makes for a plush Cadillac ride  I know the Pike is another favorite for 575 drivers and of course the Fox. I can tell you I was extremely happy w/ the purchase and I count the minutes between rides.

Had it for 3 full rides on the same trails I rode my HT. Happy for you that you like the Trance but I did not. For me it did not climb well at all (my HT was better including the technical climbs), felt heavy and was not very plush and sometimes unexpected. The 575 is a superb climber and great overall bike. It feels lighter than the Trance at list for me.
I am sure you'll like the big upgrade to the 575.
I was not nervous about the single pivot as the maintenance advantage is clear but thought that HL performance may be better. I guess that the RP3 and the flex pivot cancells out most of the theoretical difference in performance.

A friend has a trance and loves it as much as I love my 575. It felt heavy to me, I can't explain why since it probably weighs about the same as my yeti. But the steering and just general feel felt more truck than sports car. Another friend went from an anthem to ASR. He said that the maestro had better acceleration but that the single pivot with dogbone ruled on the downhills. I also love the higher bottom bracket on the 575, contrary to what you may think it makes the bike work much better in tight twisty switchbacks. Find a 575 and try it out. As for forks I have a fox 140 RLC and love it but I've heard great things about the Pike.

Thanks all you guys for the responses, all reaaly useful. Pike looks like the popular choice for up front. So long as the 575 climbs well I've no doubt to it's pedigree on the downhill stuff coming from the same blood line as the AS-X
One final set of thoughts, is there much flex in the back end, because have also been looking at IH MKIII Expert which is going for $1599 at moment with a killer spec (Pike U-Turn, SRAM, Thompson etc) but have read very mixed reports about the flex and pivot quality at the back end.......

that is a smoking deal on the IH! It's a solid spec, and I doubt you could assemble those parts separately for the price of the whole bike. Heck, if I where in the market for a 575 I'd consider picking up the IH, swapping the parts over and selling the IH frame on ebay (I bet you could get a couple hundred for it). Only thing you'd need is a headset (and to make sure the steerer wasn't cut too short).
Yeti is never going to compete with a company like IH on price, most on this board where happy to pay for the 575. Tells you something.

A 575 frame can be had for a few hundred less than the $1399 MSRP.
call around to a few mail order/web retailers. If you are not sure about any certain retailer's reputation, just have Speedgoat price match it.
any yes, the 575 is that wicked, even at MSRP.

The 2007 MKIII has been redesigned to improve on a few subtle shortcomings of the 2006 - lower frame weight and increased headangle being the two major changes. While I think the 2007 MKIII might be a competitor to the 575, the relatively steeper headangle on the 2006 MKIII would keep me from buying it (I've learned that I much prefer the 575's slack HA when descending, and the climbing does not suffer as a result).
With that said, I would probably follow Joules suggestion if I were in the market today. I'm sure you would get more than a couple of hundred for a brand new MKIII frame, especially if you sell it in the spring.
Is the 575 worth x amount more than the MKIII? A great riding bike is definitely worth more than a bike that does not ride as great. The 575 is a GREAT RIDING BIKE. Is the 2006 MKIII a better ride? You'd have to ride it yourself to make that determination.

I have a Trance 2 and have taken a Yeti 575 on a short test trail. LOVED the Yeti and prefer the part kits it comes with (Fox fork, RP23, Juicy instead of HFX-9, carbon bar, wider rims, Minions, etc.) to just about any brand. The stock 2007 575 Enduro Race at $3000 is a kick butt bike IMO.
I like the Trance but am looking to sell it and get a 575 w/in a year. For the rocky trails that I ride, the Trance just doesn't have enough crank/pedal clearance. And 4.2" is fine, but 5.75" would never leave me longing. Just feels like the 575 wants to party.
Two other bikes that I think are good values in the 5-6" genre: 5" Fisher Hi deluxe or Pro, or the 6"/5" Stumpjumper, especially the 2007 Elite. But both feature narrower rims/tires, and the Fisher runs a custom fork geometry making replacing the fork iffy. SJ's paint shemes are cheesy looking. And the Reign isn't supposed to climb as well any of the above.

If you hat the crank pedal clearance on the Trance you'll REALLY hate the stumpy! Stumpy's are known for low BB height. I sold my stumpy to get my 575. The increased pedal clearance is a godsend. It's surprising how it helps on steep switchbacks.
