Hi everybody,

I'm currently on the very verge of buying a 5-Spot myself (most probably next week) and I thought it would be nice to have this "data base" of all the Spots people in the forum had, so we could enjoy ourselves at the many personalities this wonderful frame could have.

It could also help people wondering how to setup their Spot frames (I pondered the "right" setup for me for about 4 weeks!) based on trued and tested setups for specific purposes.

I think we could start by briefly describing the main purpose which we give to our enjoyment of the bike, along with a brief description of the terrain we usually ride.
* Main purpose: agressive XC, extreme trail riding, epic rides, etc...
* Trail terrain: baby head rocky trail, smooth singletrack, paved+gravel, ...

Then we could list the bike setup:
* Frame Size & Color:
* Fork:
* Brakes:
* Cranks:
* Front Derailleur:
* Rear Derailleur:
* Pedals:
* Stem:
* Handlebar:
* Seatpost:
* Saddle:
* Bottom Bracket:
* Cassette:
* Headset:
* Grips:
* Front Tire:
* Front Rim:
* Front Hub/Skewer:
* Rear Tire:
* Rear Rim:
* Rear Hub/Skewer:

Please also add future changes you would do to this setup and the reasoning behind it.

Please post your setups. Pictures would be nice!

Enjoy the trail!!!

Thanks to all the Homers who helped me decide to replace my Id with a Spot. I could not be happier with my decision. If I had to describe the Spot in one word it would be: "SMOOTH". Went on its maiden voyage today and this thing just fits like a glove: well balanced, stable, nimble and plush. It is everything I want in a bike. Did I mention it's smooth? Absolutely smooth uphill and downhill; but of course, you all knew that. I Love this bike!!!

My new ride...!

just got my new set of wheels - my first fs bike - an 05 turner 5spot. so i'm posting the requisite bike geek photos - because you gotta, you know?

Main purpose: agressive XC, extreme trail riding,
Trail terrain: the annoying mid atlantic/north eastern kind. no flow - all climbs and covered
w/ rocks and roots. annoyingly tech.

Weight: apprx 30 lbs

I'll be adding my race face bash guard. at 30 lbs, it seems like a pretty great weight. not that i'd know anyways - i'm coming off from a specialized rockhopper comp. that thing isn't even the same league as this baby - so for my novice riding skills, this thing feels amazing to me.

also, i don't want to be a walking ad - but i had the bike built up by jerry at peak mountain bikes in douglaston - and man, i can't say enough good things about them super top notch service - not only did jerry treat me right, but he did an amazing job on the build. for all you new york city kids like me, it was really easy to get to using the lirr - one block from the station. but i'm definately now a believer in the power of a great lbs. i'll be doing all my work there for sure.

anyways, here's the bike. i feel like a proud father. heh. sorry, my computer is in the shop, so i can't resize or anything - but they should be pretty small files.

wish me luck!

cheers!

Spot build and thought's:

Frame thought's:
This frame is perfect for single track and light free riding. Tough, but not too heavy. Plush, but no bob and feels like it has more travel than 5".

It's also managed to get my confidence levels back to where they used to be when I raced BMX's as a kid.

Most importantly, whether going up or down, it's an absolute blast to ride.

Key differences over some other brands:
Low maintenance - just squirt a bit of grease into the zerk fittings and off you go
High build quality (welds, pre finished BB shell, faced calliper mounts)

Main purpose: agressive / extreme trail riding, epic rides, and a few enduros

Trail terrain: Natural and manufactured singletrack/lines in GB, Wales, Sctotland, Europe and NZ

Bike setup:
* Frame Size & Color: KLrg Black
* Fork: Manitou Nicon Plat 20mm
* Brakes: Hope Mono M4's (185mm front & back)
* Cranks: Shimano XT hollowtech II's
* Front Derailleur: Sram
* Rear Derailleur: Sram Xo
* Pedals: Crank brothers mallet/candy
* Stem: Thompson 4x
* Handlebar: Easton CNT
* Seatpost: Thompson
* Saddle: SDG Bell Air
* Bottom Bracket: XT
* Cassette: XT
* Headset: Chris King
* Grips: Bontrager Big Earl's
* Front Tire: Continental Vertical 2.3 UST
* Front Rim: Mav. XM819
* Front Hub: Chris King
* Rear Tire: Continental Vertical 2.3 UST
* Rear Rim: Mav. XM819
* Rear Hub/Skewer: Chris King / Salsa

Future changes to the above setup (and why):
- Marzoochi Roco RC - so I don't completely kill my RP3 for endures
- Bigger tyres - more grip, easier on the frame & me
- Possible fork upgrade (although light and great when working, my Nixon has proved to be unreliable and now has a harsher platform since it's warranty fix)

Other than that, I'm considering a bigger bike, but will reserve judgment on if it's going to be a RFX or Highline or another until next year when I can afford it (so I don't kill my spot).

New 5 Spot

Finally got my Spot build completed. Took a few months and the some extra freelance work to help buy the parts, but I'm really happy with it. Build specs below:

* Main purpose: agressive XC
* Trail terrain: Typical northeast technical terrain... rocks, roots, steeps

* Frame Size & Color: 2005 Large electrical tape black
* Fork: 2006 RockShox Pike 454 air U-Turn
* Brakes: Hayes comp 6" (leftover from my NRS) they still work
* Cranks: Truvative Stylo GXP
* Front Derailleur: Shimano XT (only shimano part on the bike)
* Rear Derailleur: SRAM X9
* Pedals: Speedplay Frogs
* Stem: Thomson X4 120mm x 10 degree
* Handlebar: FSA K-force 40mm riser
* Seatpost: Thomson Elite 330mm
* Saddle: WTB Speed V
* Bottom Bracket: Truvativ GXP
* Cassette: SRAM PG-990
* Headset: FSA Orbit XTreme
* Grips: ODI Ruffian lock on
* Front Tire: Kenda Nevegal 2.35 DTC
* Front Rim: Mavic F219 32 hole
* Front Hub/Skewer: Hope Bulb with 20mm conversion
* Rear Tire: GEAX Sturdy 2.25
* Rear Rim: Mavic 321 32 hole
* Rear Hub/Skewer: Chris King ISO disc

Oops. Forgot build weight. Using the me on the scale/me on the scale with bike in hands comes out to 30.4 lbs. I know its not the most acurate, but it feels about right. The extra weight is in the wheels, tires, and Pike. I hate truing wheels, so what if it slows me down. :D
