tune up help for newb with old school Manitou SX

picked up an oldie but goodie Balance AL350 with a Manitou SX...1997 i think? i was able to download the manual online.
before i go tearing it apart, does anybody have some tips for this fork?
i am not looking to replace it since my money is tight. i just want to ride it until i get back into biking shape and can buy a newer bike.
any tips or help is appreciated.
    thanks.
    Looking forward to riding.....

I used to own one of those! My 1st ever aluminium framed bike.
As for the fork, you may really want to check the elastomers in that, as they have a habit of going very hard and crumbling to bits. You used to be able to get spring kits to replace them, but you may have a job tracking them down.
Dougal is also a member here as well, so he may chime in with some relevant information on the SX.
I don't crash, I just have slightly uncontrolled dismounts!

Here is a pic of the fork. How do I figure out what year this fork is from?

Probably have to take it apart? I have look everywhere on the fork but there isn't a product date or manufacture date listed?

That is a 1997, right before they switched to the TPC system. As kiwi mentioned, that fork used two elastomers and a small spring. I had the "FS Ti" version of that fork. I replaced the cartridge damper with a TPC unit, which was worlds better. Check dougal's site for rebuild instructions.

    Thanks. I appreciate the help.

Good to know its a 97. I had actually downloaded both the 97 and 98 manuals.
I checked out the link above for Dougal.

    Nice write ups.

This will be much easier than I thought..hopefully.

Dougal's the guy for old Manitou forks, He has or had a Skareb with a highly modded SPV AFAIK, pretty neat stuff.
