Trek 3700 front fork upgrade for 90lb rider?

Just got my son a used 2005 Trek 3700. Don't want to invest too much money until after he is grows out of this bike. It's a 13" frame with a RST 191 front fork. I thinks travel is around 60mm. He gets maybe an inch of travel on very hard impacts if he's lucky. We basically do single track trails with some downhill. I am looking to upgrade his fork just a little to make it softer.

I found a guy that has few Manitou R-Seven Forks (80mm travel) which seem to be in pretty good shape. He wanted originally $200 for one of them, but I talked him down to $160. Is this worth it, or should I look for another cheap shock. I only have $60 into his trek right now so I wouldn't mind spending the money if it will make a big difference.

$160 sounds pretty good. an air fork should be able to be set soft enough for a 90 pound rider, but I haven't personally tried it. still, it should be a big upgrade from a old hydraulic coil.
