Tapered steer tube vs 1.5 steer tube

I see that the tapered tube tapers down from 1.5 to 1-1/8. Is it giving up any of the stiffness of the 1.5 doing this? What are the pros/cons between these two fork designs? I am getting back into biking after being away for quite a number of years and there is a lot changes in technology so have quite a lot of questions and this is one of them. Thanks for any info.

Tapered is very marginally lighter, and uses much much more available 1 1/8th stems.

Its sort of a gimmick. Full 1.5 is pretty oldskool, and was ditched years ago for normal 1 1/8th straight head tubes because the difference wasnt really worth it. It came back as tapered and stuck this time.

Your best bet is to buy a bike with a tapered head tube, but solely for compatibility with new gear.
