    Super Deluxe re-valve

    Folks seem to be saying that this shock is under compression damped. I thing the same.

    Did you measure the oil viscosity? Should be Maxima 3wt shock fluid (14 cSt) the 7wt shock fluid is 21cSt.
    The Maxima Plush 7wt (30.4 cSt) is fork oil. Not shock fluid.

    Fox and X-fusion were the only ones using oil that thick in rear shocks.

    Do you have data on the RS fluid? I figured if it was labled as 7wt, it would be a Maxima 7wt.

    Also, can you correct the shim thicknesses? I didn't have a mic.

    The RS 3wt is Maxima 3wt and used in the majority of their rear shocks and cartridge dampers (Charger, Charger2). 14cSt @ 40C. It's a good fluid but many get scared of the seal sweller additives.

    For shims. I haven't been that deep into a Deluxe yet. Only external repairs. Be careful with these new RS rear shocks as the available spare parts list is pretty small.

    The specified oil from the service manual is Rockshox 7wt. They re-brand Maxima so I figured it was the new bike line.

    For the previous generation (Monarch) they bounced between 7wt and 3wt for different variations of the inline shocks (not piggy back) and I couldn't find a good correlation or reason why. We simply identify by colour in service. Reddish means 3wt. Purplish 7wt. All the piggy back Monarchs were 3wt. I measure viscosity if required but visual ID is enough 9/10 times.

    In practice there's not a lot between them. A few clicks of rebound. Shims do a good job of compensating for oil viscosity differences as 20C temp change already doubles/halves your viscosity.

    The super deluxe tuning kits are the same as a monarch plus, which I also found was often too soft even at my 70kg weight. I cant remember the exact shim thicknesses right now but I remember the M tune being slightly stiffer than that with a couple of 0.15mm shims in there

    And yeah the stock fluid is 7wt maxima rsf 21cst. I use a 19cst bel ray HVI

    Yes its now 7wt in all RS Deluxe and Super Deluxe shocks.

    Forgot to mention it before but if you go back in to the shock I would recommend pulling the ring shim out of the rebound too

    Dougal, would there be a noticeable difference in damping between say a 15 and a 16cst that a rider would notice ?

    Between 30-50 degrees, no. You'll need a big viscosity change (50% or so) to be noticable. At 20C maybe if you are sensitive to that.

    But outside that oils even with the same 40C viscosity can behave very very differently. especially in the cold. I measure oil viscosity at 40C, 20C and 0C. The worst oils at 0C are almost 3x thicker than the best oils. They're within 10% at 40C.

    That's a terrible looking piston in that shock. The shim surface area contact on both sides seems huge. The more flat surface area you have contacting the face shim the more surface tension you need to break to get things moving. Looks cheap to manufacture though!

    I feel like we're in the midst of a rush to make everything suspension cheaper to make. FIT vs GRIP. Charger 1 vs Charger 2. 1x drivetrains. Amalgamation of brands with different colour schemes to differentiate!

    Its been a while I think I just worked off the sds sheets and the figures on pvds site. The other oils apart from 3wt have more precise viscosities😂
