Setting up trail suspension to ride cross country

This may be a silly question, why not buy a cross country bike right? But what if I just fall in love with a trail bikes overall geometry and ride but the 5in travel is a little overboard for the terrain I ride. Is it possible to tune the suspension so that it's optimized for XC riding (changing the air pressure in the shocks)?

most suspensions have lock out's and such... newer tech systems are pretty sweet also, going with too much suspension isn't all bad
Going to try and bring Trail Tire TV back. go take a look... http://trailtiretv.blogspot.com/

You can setup any bike any way you want. The best thing you can do to really dive into suspension setup is to completely ignore sag and everything you've heard about sag.

if the bike bobs around too much for you, make it stiffer!
