Fox 34 Talas Travel Adjust Mod - Help Needed

    All,

I presently have a Fox 34 Talas 160mm on a bike designed for Fox 32 150mm. The longer fork is great for downhill/flowy trails, but makes the bike a little harder to get around the switchbacks.

From Fox Service: They build a 34 Talas 150mm specifically for OEM. They will sell the lower talas air shaft for the OEM version fork (820-02-154-kit) so it is possible to convert the 160mm/120mm Talas down to 150mm/120mm.

I have scoured the Fox service pages, and there is very little info on the fox 34.

Can anyone tell me if the Talas lower cartridge is removed through the bottom of the inner fork leg, or pushed up through the top? (On the 34 Float, it is removed through bottom)

If it is removed through the bottom, I assume I can leave the upper Talas air shaft in place when I do the swap?

    thanks
    Shawn

    Ok,

Did this today. It was not that hard to convert the 26" Talas 34 160mm down to 150mm.

Here are steps I followed after removing fork from bike:
    1. Let air out of Talas assembly.
    2. Loosen set screw and remove rebound knob on right leg. Loosen bottom nuts on each leg.
    3. Talas side, unscrew nut to end of stud to protect threads, tap with soft faced hammer to loosen.
    4. Damper side, unscrew nut about 1/8" to 1/4" and leave socket on nut, tap socket with soft faced hammer to loosen.
    5. Remove nuts, drain fox oil when you turn the fork back upright.
    6. Pull off lowers.
    7. Remove snap ring from BOTTOM of inner Talas leg. You do not have to unscrew the upper Talas assembly from the crown!
    8. While holding in air stem on top of talas leg, pull out talas lower shaft from BOTTOM of inner leg.
    9. Drain float fluid from upper Talas leg.
    10. Transfer plastic collar from old Talas lower shaft assembly to new Talas lower shaft assembly.
    11. Coat inner fork leg with ~3ml of float fluid and liberally apply float fluid to new talas lower shaft.
    12. While holding in air stem on top of talas leg, insert new talas lower shaft into leg. The end of the upper Talas assembly is right there, so it is easy to feed the upper inner tube into the hole in the lower shaft. Add another 2-3 mls of float fluid before the bottom collar goes in.
    13. Seat the plastic collar into the base of the inner talas leg, and carefully install the snap ring. It may help to wrap a piece of paper around the Talas lower shaft so you dont scratch it with the snap ring while you are installing the snap ring.
    14. Re-install lowers, add 15 mls green oil to talas leg, 30 mls to damper leg.
    15. Reinstall lower nuts, torque appropriately.

    Parts used:

820-02-154-kit Talas lower air shaft assembly
241-00-005 Crush washer for right side (left side re-used)
    025-03-002 Float Fluid (2 packs)
    025-03-008 Green 10 wt.

Overall not a hard job at all, and the Fox 34/150 is only 7mm longer than the 32/150 so my bike geometry is back in the sweet spot. When I was running at the full 160mm length it slackened the bike too much, ~ 66 head angle.

    Hope this helps others
    Thanks
    Shawn

Very helpful. I'm thinking of doing this myself. How long do you estimate this took you?

It took me about 1.5 hours figuring it out along the way. Would be much faster next time.

    Thanks

    Can you change a 150 float to a 160mm?
If so do you think a great deal of parts are needed?

    How about a 27.5/650b 34 Talas 150/120 down to 140/110?

    +1

I'm interested is it possible to reduce travel on FOX 34 Talas 26" from 160-130 to 130-100?

    Thanks!

I have a new 26 talas 150, but want 160. Anyone have a 160 cartridge they want to sell or trade?
