Can I put air in my front suspension with an electric pump?

    Hi guys,

My front suspension is a rockshox recon silver and I would like to avoid a visit to my lbs. can I use the electric pump that I use to fill my wheels? Could it damage the shock? Can I use a foot pump that's capable of up to 120 PSI (That's all I need) Thanks. A hand pump can fill only about 60 psi and I need 120.
Thanks. Your input is much appreciated.

I'd suggest purchasing the right tool for the job - a shock pump (low volume high pressure). Visit the LBS and make the purchase.

You need a high pressure, low volume pump. If you're talking about the type of electric pump you plug into your cigarette lighter or use to pump up inflatable toys, those aren't designed for high pressure. But if it's made for high pressure, it won't damage your recon unless you put too much air in there.

How about a foot pump that is capable of up to 120 psi? Is it safe?

Shocks/forks need very little air to fill up, it is best to get a shock pump to fill them. Unlike a floor pump or compressor a shock pump connector will detach without air loss and the short stroke, low volume body allows fine pressure control.

Thank you. How often do I have to fill the shock with air if I ride twice a week? I want to find out if it worth the 30$ or should I go to my lbs. Thanks again.

It should hold air for quite while but it's good to check weekly, so you'll need a pump of your own.

I can go between services w/o touching my air pressure. I think owning an air suspension should absolutely necessitate owning a shock pump. Did you purchase this bike from the LBS? Are you just asking them to check your pressure? I think if I owned the LBS i'd sell you a pump.
