2001 Z1 vs 04 MX Comp or Pro

Hi , I was thinking about an upgrade for my fork let me know if this sounds good or should I stick with what I have.

Currently I am running a Marzocchi 2001 Z1 MCR with ETA . All in all a good fork but sometimes I feel it might be too big and too heavy. I really like the ETA feature and the easy maitenence for oil chages and spring swaps. This is a must. I like to do all my own work as we don't have any really good shops that I would trust opening up my shock and mucking around.

I am riding a 2002 Enduro FSR with a Float RL on the back. Sometimes I will swap that out for a Vanilla coil over that I have for more travel and a linear rate. I am 180 lbs and ride agressive XC with no drops bigger than 4' ~ 5' .

I wanted to upgrade my fork last year (2003) to a Vanilla R Forx but after a bit of chatter about breaking drop outs I held off. I dialed my Z1 in with an oil change and spring swap.
I am also concered about weight. Marzocchi "CLAIMS" the Z1 MCR is 4.3 pounds - I really don't believe this I think its higher - I have never weighed it.

Would I see any benifit upgrading to an MX Comp or PRO (with eta on both) or would this be a downgrade?
I know I'd be going from 130mm to 120mm other that that can anybody give me some insight?
What is the differnce in valveing? weight? would I be able to change the oil and spring as easy on the 2004 forks as the 2001?

    Thanks alot.
    chris

You would be taking a downgrade in terms of damping. The MX has much lower quality dampers and will have noticably less small bump sensitivity and anyone who says otherwise hasn't ridden both. I really don't see any reason to go from an MCR to an MX... if you really want a compairable fork that saves you some weight you need to look at the air version of the Marathon, otherwise I would stick to what you have.

    Also, some weights:
    Z1 MCR 01: 2022 grams = 4.45774694 pounds
    MX Pro ETA 04 (120mm): 1972 grams = 4.34751581 pounds
    Marathon S(coil) 105mm 03: 1985 grams = 4.3761759 pounds
    Marathon SL(air) 105mm 03: 1743 grams = 3.84265723 pounds

I don't know how much heavier the 120mm 04 Marathons are...

thanks for the info Rob! I appreciate the weights too. I figured that was the case but I just wanted to make sure. any one have any tuning tips for oil weights or levels or any way to adapt the cartradges for the Z1 MCR ? Just trying out different ways to tune this fork.
    thanks
