    XTR SL 980 I-Spec

Anybody know where I could get just the I-spec bracket to replace the traditional clamp on the SL 980? I found a few in the UK but none in the US.
The LBS couldn't find it through Quality either. Thanks!!

    Not in North America

I contacted Competitive Cyclist last night and they said that Shimano is not going to offer the iSpec adapters/shifters in the North American market.

I've been watching the Chain Reaction Cycles website as the have the adapters listed on their site. Originally they said they would be available 31Jan2011 and they have now changed the date two times, now it's due mid-February.

I'm keeping my fingers cross that this does become available somewhere!

Thanks for the update. I had placed a order for the I-spec shifters but they sent the traditional clamp. Could of returned them but the deal I got wasn't going to happen again so I kept them. I figured I could score the I-spec brackets and keep the others as a back-up.

not much help if you already have the shifters, but the whole Ispec shifter set is on Ebay for a good price. Just got mine in Friday :-)

I bought the full set as well and just sold the other full pair which was a better deal for me.

    http://www.blueskycycling.com/produc...ion_Covers.htm

Here is a place with them in stock though if you want just covers. I am really liking this set up and think it is worth swapping out for.

Daniel Thanks Much for the Link, I have ordered some other stuff from BlueSky and they were good to deal with. In the link you sent I can't tell if that is $60 for one cover or a set? Do you know?
    Thanks again!

I am loving this set up...

It is nice and clean looking as well as very functional to be able to remove all with the one bolt while keeping grips on.

Your shift levers are setup as far out as possible, right?

This may seem like a dumb question but............I have M985 brakes and XT Dyna Sys shifters. I plan on upgrading my shifters and derailleurs to new XTR. I want to get the the I-Spec clamp shifters (thanks for the Blue Sky link - sick deal). So here's my question - Can you get the traditional clamp/covers for the I-Spec shifters aftermarket? If some reason I decide I don't like the I-Spec setup or for some reason end up with a different brake or on a different bike etc. I don't want to be stuck with a shifter that will only mount to a specific brake lever.

    Chain Reaction cycles

Has them and I was able to order my shifters with them already installed. Costs the same as regular shifters just another option.

Does anyone know if dealers in the US can order the I-Spec brackets yet(why Trek would spec their bikes without them is beyond me)?

Also, it's 41$ for the XT brackets, 71$ for the XTR.

Does anyone know if weight is the only difference between the two versions and would the XT version work for the XTR brakes and shifters?

Why does the kit come with the shifter top portion. Seems like you could just swap out the mounting bracket instead of the whole top portion. I'm referring to the XTR kit.

The way those pieces are designed you have to change to the new top portion, I remember looking at mine and thinking the same thing until I was installing the I-Spec and then was like "oh thats why" but I can't remember exactly why right now!

Also as a side note to anyone here, I have gone to a one finger brake style of riding instead of two and while the XTR levers are AWESOME for this, the I-Spec mounts are somewhat of a problem for me now because I like my brakes inside of the bars far and I have to move my hands from the end of the bars to shift......just a heads up! I might change back.

    OneEyedHito,
If you decide to not use your i-spec brackets, let me know. I'm interested in buying them. Apparently I can't PM you since I haven't posted on the forums much (I'm a lurker- not much of a poster).

    thanks,

I installed the iSpec brackets on my bike and I'm not crazy about the set up to be perfectly honest. I like how tidy my bar is now but wish my shifters were a little further away from my grips. I already have them adjusted out as far as they'll go but want a little more. Anyone care to swap their regular brackets for iSpec(XTRs)?

So do you have the mounts slammed right up against the grips for 2 or 3 finger braking, or do you have them pushed inboard 1-2 inches so your index finger naturally falls right at the end of the usable portion of the brake lever, the correct setup for 1-finger braking?

Disregard everything I've written in this thread. My shifters were actually moved all the way in not all the way out.

Not to be too sneaky on here, piggy-backing on the thread, but I bought a set of XT iSpec shifters (came with ispec standard) and am thinking I would would prefer the traditional, two clamp (e.g. a clamp for the brake levers, a clamp for the shifters) setup. If anyone out there is looking for an ispec for clamps trade, drop me a line as well!

Actually, I should probably just make this a distinct WTT/Question on the forum, given that the XT setup is different from the XTR.

I am considering buying i-spec shifters, I already have the brakes/ XO shifters. When the I-spec shifters are being installed can you adjust the fore/aft position of the shifter independently from the angle of the brake lever? I hope that is phrased clearly!

can anyone estimate, or measure, the lateral adjustability of the shift levers when installed I-spec style?

I am a poor boy and I dont want to drop the loot if this setup may not work for me so thank you in advance for your input.

I was told you could only do side to side adjustments. This was the reason I didn't go with the I-Spec. I am real picky on the rotation/angle of my shifters and didn't want to chance it. Also looking at the Shimano break-down diagram it looks to confirm that the rotation/angle is not independent of the brake lever.

I was just starting to get mildly annoyed that I can't just buy the SL-M980-I listed on the box so I put a message into my LBS. They say Norco Lambert doesn't even order them, you have no choice but to buy the bracket, which in Canada lists for $105. A bit of a piss off.

Hearing someone say that they don't like the positions available with Ispec and they're switching back cheered me right up. I think I'll try them out first.

    The other way around...

Well... I got the I spec and I dont like them AT ALL. I was wondering if any of you guys will know where to get the normal NON I spec body.

Maybe you are keen on selling me your old XTR NON I SPEC cover to me?

    Cheers.

    slx and i-spec

I have 10 speed slx dyansys shifters on my 2011 giant xtc29er and i have just purchased the new xt trail brakes. I am wondering if you can get spec mounts that will fit on my 2011 slx 10 speed shifters???

I have tried searching on line and it looks like the 2013 slx shifters now come with i-spec option but i cant find anywhere to purchase the mounts and dont even know if they will fit on my 2011 slx dynasys????

The only other thing i wondered was if the xt i-spec covers would work on earlier model slx shifters. Any help or advice would be appreciated as i dont really want to buy new xt shifters unless it is absolutley necessary.

    thanks

mudmav - My word should not be the final one on this by any means, but my understanding is that the current SLX shifters will not be i-spec compatible at all. They've never been listed as such, so I bet the only way to find out would be to order the XT i-spec tops (which are expensive), take off the tops on your current SLX and just see if they can be made to work. However, for the cost, I'd just sell your SLXs and buy some XTs.
The 2013 SLX announcements I saw made it sound like the 2013 parts would start to be available as early as July this year....so if you could wait a few months you could at least buy 2013 SLX i-spec shifters.

TwoTone -- Bummer - but I'd still be interested! My I-Spec shifters are in great shape, especially because I run a 1x10 drivetrain and have never even mounted the left/front shifter!

Well after quite some time with these brackets and shifters I just can't seem to get comfortable. Anyone care to swap their standard brackets for I-spec? Mine are in excellent condition. No flaws or anything. Looking for XTR standard brackets.
