I'm in the market for a new crank set and have determined that for the price and cost of repair the xtr is completely out of the question. In doing some price comparisons on XT cranks, I came across some Hone's. I've been out of the loop, I guess, but I have never heard of them and am not sure which way to go. I know the heritage of the XT group, but am usure of the new groups(ie: saint and hone). Any sugestions?
I have both and they are both great... the XT is a bit lighter as it has a butted CrMo axle and 3 alu rings, the Hone has an alu axle (thick and heavier than the one in the XT) and a steel granny.....
The spindle on the 2 ring Hone is steel. I've had good luck with mine, used for nearly everything from trail to 4x/dj for the last season and a half. By comparison, I bent the spindle on the 3 ring hones in less than half a season.
Hone is just a black version of LX. The new Xt is supposed to be stiffer and lighter than last years.
I the new group recently and did not note any difference from my old xt. I have a hone and that is a honking crank. If you are a bigger guy I would go for the hone and save the denerow.-sp?
that's for the 3-ring version...the 2-ring is a different beast...much sturdy axle and pedal inserts, as was mentioned before..
