    Someone Ease My Worries: Possible Crack On DeoreXT M770 Crank?

    Dear passers-by and Shimano tech

    I recently made a purchase of a secondhand XT m770 crankset(170mm length) from a notable figure in the local biking community .

    After the excitement of getting my hands on one faded once I reached home, a closer inspection on the cracks revealed a scar on the driveside crankarm, just above the pedal thread hole .

    To illustrate it , I have conjured a rough diagram and pictures exemplifying what I meant:

    Diagram(red line represents scar):

    Photo of "scar":

    The lighting made the scar look shiny

    I have also noted the cosmetic nature of the scar:

    1. Not jagged
    2. No "branches" i.e the alleged crack does not branch out into tiny cracks at each end
    3. Thin scar ( my nail cant seem to penetrate into the "abyss" of the crack "
    4. Rougly 11mm long

    Now I have no real idea on what I am going to do with the cranks...

    Instead of conjuring a rough diagram, why not spend that time getting well-lit, properly focused pictures?

    It looks like a scratch. It's not any place that will fail catastrophically if it turns into a crack.

    So it shouldnt be any area of concern, am I right?

    I have no proper camera to take the pictures, only relying on a poor handphone camera.

    Will try to post up new pictures.

    I wouldn't worry about that. I'd be stoked if that was the worst my cranks had seen.
