    Rear der options with 11-36 1x10 set-up

I bought a Camber expert, came with 3x10 dynasys (slx shifters and front der, XT rear der, and HG81 11-36 cassette). I have converted the front to a 1x with a 34t Race Face single speed ring, using the der for the chain guide until I get the MRP or ethirteen for it, and its great for where and how I ride, my last 2 bikes were 1x9 Sram X9 with 32t front and 11-34 rear.

My question is about the rear der and shifter, I'm new to Shimano but so far really like the shifting with what I have. If I had the cash I'd swap the cassette to an Xt unit for weight savings but the HG81 works perfectly well. I ran medium cage rears with shorter chainlines on my last 2 bikes (both hardtails), can I run a shorter cage with this 11-36?

Everything I've seen has a long cage shimano on a 34 or 36 rear, but bikes like the Stumpy Evo can be had new with Sram X0 running a short cage with the same cassette range on a 1x10 setup.

Anyone running a medium or short cage Shimano rear on a 1x10?
Hardrock 29er, Niner EMD9, Cannondale F29, Camber Expert, 650b Nickel all gone.

you can run any GS (medium)10spd Shimano Rd with that setup. You could run an SS (short) Rd but there are non produced yet for 10spd.

RD cage length is correlated to the number of rings that you are running up front rather than the cassette range. As long as the capacity of the Rd is less that the cassette. ie some road Rd's wont be able to be run on some mountain cassettes.

    Another question:

If I'm using an XTR 980 cassette, chain and rear d in a 1x10 drivetrain, what chainrings must I use. Should I assume a 950 (8 spd) chainring has teeth that are too thick for a narrow 10 spd chain? Can I use a 9 spd chainring? What of these are compatible?

    Thank you!

9 or 10 spd ring would be best. 8spd may work because you are not looking for it to shift but I would stick with a 9 or 10.
