Shoes are a personal item. Find your budget and try some on. I have owned Shimano shoes in the past and loved them. I ride with Shimano 540 pedals. For the money they have proven to be very good. They were also very easy to learn the skills needed to ride clipped in.

+1 for the 540s. They aren't the lightest pedals but they sure are reliable.

Shimano SPD pedals are all the same design, just different weights. I told myself I would start out with the cheap $60 SPD pedals and upgrade if I liked clipping in. Well three years and countless miss later the cheap SPD pedals are still going strong. I have worn out cleats and put a couple drops of oil in the pedals, but I can't kill 'em.
