I have the newer (last year) external bearings/XT crank setup on a RX100. It feels like I have a bearing issue that resembles the feel you used to get when your bearings were over-tightened (in the old spndle/pre-cartridge era). The again, it could be similar to the feeling I would get when the first version of hollow cranks were compromised/contaminated. The I had to locate new bearings to go in the cups.
My question is, does/can the current bearing configuration be overtightened/squeezed? It seems like the shaft just moves inside the two cups and is held in place by the bolts on the non-drive side. Can the lock ring be over-tightened to over-squeeze the bearings inside? If the bearings are contaminated, can the seals be compromised enough to introduce new grease? Or...is the only solution a purchase of the entire external bearing program?
