Compatibility with Shimano and Avid brakes

I currently have Avid Ultimate hydraulic brakes. My rear brake lever mount area cracked. I need a very inexpensive replacement.

Can a Shimano lever be used with an Avid caliper?

Any other thoughts or tips on replacement.

    Thanks

Nope, Shimano use mineral oil and Avid use DOT4 brake fluid.
