8 speed Derailleur used with 9 speed bike

Am I mistaken thinking that the shifter makes a system 8 speed or 9 speed?
I just broke a derailleur on my 9 speed bike and I have a friend that has a take off from an 8 speed bike.

Will the 8 speed (sorry I dont know what model) work as a 9 speed with 9 speed shifters?

    Thanks

I've gotten 9spd derailleurs to work with 8spd shifter in the past. So I haven't done it, but I think it could work.

The derailleur doesn't know what gear it's in. It only does what the shifter tells it to (by the amount of cable pulled). 8 speed and 9 speed cassettes are the same overall width (just with different spacing between cogs). The 8 speed cage MAY be slightly wider, but no big deal. You'll have to adjust the derailleur and limits as you would with any derailleur. It'll work fine.

    Thanks,

I just put it on my bike before checking the site. It works great.
