10 speed XT cassette and road shifters

I really want to put an 11- 36 cassette on my cross bike. It has Ultegra 6700 10 speed shifters, and now that I am seeing the 10 speed XT cassettes become available I am ready to grab one. Shimano claims that the new design of the cassette makes it incompatible with road shifters. Is this just some kind of marketing bs? Don't want to pay 2.5x as much for an XX cassette.

    Anyone have any helpful input?

sure they don't mean incompatabe with road derailleurs? None of them are going to be able to take up enough chain to shift that range.

the spacing is the same as any 10 sp cassette- it will work!

I run an IRD 11-34 10 speed on my touring bike with Ultegra shifters and xtr derailleur fwiw

Santana has had a bespoke 10-spd shimano cassette on their road tandems for years.

    About 340g on a non-digital scale for the XT 11-36 10spd cassette.

Still alot better than the 12-36 9spd HG61 which has been reported to be about 420g.
