Tinker and Ned are both legends....legends that gained legendary status as international pros.

I didn't know that Ty was a top ranked international pro

The best/fittest/fastest riders should battle it out together... like in the SS category, where a 52 year old took 10th place on Friday.

Where's the glory/satisfaction in thumping fellow age-groupers that just aren't nearly as fast? Shallow victories, if you ask me. I don't know any of the people involved and they don't affect my life or racing, but the results history speak volumes. You wanna feel good about a victory? Beat those that are capable of beating you.

    Indefensible.

It's absurd. It's indefensible. Categories exist to promote competition. Competition isn't just chasing some guy who's 5 minutes off the front...in the lower categories, competition means learning how to RACE and eventually being recognized and rewarded for smart, strong racing.

When you win nats in ANY category, it's time to upgrade your stanking ass. BOTTOM LINE. 'Pro' Category is not about racers without jobs...95% of 'Pro Category' mountain bikers do something else for a living. It's absurd logic. As soon as I outran my Cat 1 competition, I begged for a pro license and petitioned for it. It was more rewarding than any trophy or blog photos. A real competitor should feel honored to have upgrade points.

Scared? Is this a strategic business decision to garner as many podium blog photos as possible?

No armchair psychology or baseless accusation from me...just the stare of shame at a bully picking on people out of his league. Upgrade, friend. I'll tell you to your face when I meet you someday. Pro is a state of mind...a insatiable desire to test oneself against the best. I fought for the privilege of testing myself against the best. It's not a place for excuses. So, upgrade and see what you've got. Or, just continue to strut on Cat 1 podiums while the pros point ans snicker at your small nuts.

i see your point and considered upgrading to Pro before I found out Ty and Marco were racing age 35 this year. no more wins for this dude!

i had hopes of battling with EB at Sea Otter but could never quite catch he and Ty. maybe it would have been different if Ty had left EB by himself a little sooner, but they worked together well into the second lap and by then i was having a great old time with my buddy Mr. Crampylegs.

i am also anticipating an epic battle this year at Nationals for the 35-39 podium. the guy that has won the last three years or so was a top 15 US pro in his day. i already know if all three are there and healthy they will take the top three spots, but it would be awesome to have a chase moto to see the crazy **** they do as they jam through traffic and fight for the 35-39 podium spots.

I choose not to take a position on this topic BUT I will say, for those of you frustrated with Ty, you should consider focusing your attention at USAC. The USAC rulebook clearly states “USA Cycling reserves the right to upgrade Category 1 riders at any time” under the MTB upgrade rules…so why hasn’t USAC “forced” him to move up if he’s a “sandbagger” as everyone says?

USAC has no more interest in forcing an upgrade than the US Cup does to its own sandbag racers - which it too has a clear rule.

Ty is approaching legend status, just not for the same reasons as Tinker and Ned... Along those same lines, Ned finished 14th at Nationals last year in the Pro group, instead of stomping his CAT1 age group. Much respect for that!!!

Maybe according to Sho-Air and Ty... "No news is bad news" sorta thing. Who knows.. I would enjoy seeing Ty battle it out with the local pros. Based on his times, he would not be missing the podium by much either...

Again, I don't mind having Ty in my field so much...motivates me to train harder. Next year, I will be aging up, so it won't be an issue for me personally at all...

Looks like Marco is gonna be the new "target"..haha. He is crushing the Cat1 competition now..

There is a 6-page article about Ty in the May 2012 issue of Mountain Bike Action magazine where he also talks about exactly this topic.

For me, I am clearly not a beginner after more than 10 years of riding. So, the bottom of Cat-2 is where I race. I am very happy that there are no age groups in Cat-2 SS.

Still trying hard to understand this... Ty claims he doesn't have time to train hard and race as a "pro", yet he has been in Sun Valley training for Nationals for a week already. Pretty sure not many actual pros show up to train for two weeks in advance of an event. Does anyone understand this?

It's hard to hate the success that can get tst at 2011 in XC and 1st in shorttrack/Super D in 2012 at Nationals....

Different people, different motivations. But for me, I would move up then try to see how high I could place in the pro ranks: top 50%, top 30%, top 20%, etc. I don't see the point in placing first again and again and again unless you ARE a pro. (Then you're at the top and the goal is to stay there.) Below pro, move up.

Actually, he didn't dominate nationals this year.

What happened to USA cyclings rule of win 3 times move up? I dont care if he doesnt "want" to be a pro. Get a damn grip, its embarrassing. He says hes providing a service to CAT 1 riders "if you cant beat me, you arent ready for pro", not for you to decide, thanks though. Todd Wells would be winning by 10 min too if he wined he didnt want to play with the big boys. Id rather lose racing against the best, than win by 5 min, I knew I should have stayed a sport/Cat2 10 years ago.

Ha! Have to disagree @ least based on racing against him once at Subaru Cup. He was within a minute of the other guys on the podium and they're in their 40's. Might not agree with his tactics of riding through the trees and brush to get by a large pile-up but it was the heat of the race. He also bypassed a slalom section of the course to pass the younger riders who started ahead of us. He said it wasn't marked.

Old guys almost got him in the short track the next day too. Guess we have some fast old guys here in the Midwest. Look forward to battling him this year in Wisconsin as we "know" how he races!

Ty got 1st at Fontana City National and with his time he would of beat ~42 of the Pro men for 9th place in front of Ryan Treborn.
