Single Speed Setup at Sea Otter 2009

First racer here and need some input for ride setup

I plan to ride in the beginner class (Category 3) with a SS 29er.

-What gear ratio/s should I be looking into?

-What tires or tread pattern would be best?

Any advice you can offer would be very helpful.

    Thank you

Ran my full rigid Bontrager Race Light with a 2.1" Kenda Small Block 8 on the back and some bigger tire (2.3" Nevegal, I think) on the front. Gearing was 2:1. Worked fine for me, I raced Beginner and was comfortably in second place until I crashed going 24 mph and broke my collarbone about 2 miles from the finish line.

I'll probably run the same but won't sandbag the Beginner race this time.

if you are in fact racing cat 3 I would recommend Surly Endomorph 3.7 tires, 2.75:1 gear ratio maybe even 3:1

    just kidding

I have run a rigid 69er that past three years with 2:1 and have done well, it depends on your start, if you get caught behind some slower guys on the first singletrack climb it can really mess up your placing. if you don't have many SS races under your belt and don't normally race 18 mile courses than I would run one tooth easier than 2:1 on the rear.

2:1 for a 29er...? I'm racing the open/pro/whatever it is category and have no idea what to run. 2:1 seems steep...ran 32:17 on a 29er at mas o menos in tx and got hammered on the flats and didn't quite have it for a really steep climb.

I pre-rode the course a couple weekends ago on my 29er SS...

There is a bit of climbing, and a few are real steep... I rode it 33:20 and felt pretty good at that ratio.

For tires - the course isn't rocky.... but you'll have to deal with hardpack with some loose sections, gravel, and deep sandy decents. I was riding WTB Exiwolf which did well on the preride - I will be riding Racing Ralphs for the race, 2.4 front/2.25 rear.

    Enjoy the race...
