I had the cards stacked against me. I arrived 3 minutes and some change late for the start of the Men’s Cat2 43-44 XC race… on my 39 pound 9:zero:7 fatbike. Did I let that dissuade me from kicking ass? No. End result of hammering that 16 pounds of rotating mass (26"x2.5" Surly Large Marge rims shod with 26"x3.8" Surly Nate tires with those lovey 1.2lb. 26"x2.5-2.7" Qtubes innertubes plus 4 ounces of Stan’s goop per tube) was an acceptable 15th place out of 44 entries. When I started, I believe it was the 50-something guys lining up to start, so yeah, I sort of had the cards all stacked against me… no, wait– there were no cards. I am quite happy with my results– don’t need a 20 pound cabron weenie bike to be competitive, just need to want to go against the odds with a false sense of style.

I was in the pack behind your start! Wonder why this guy was running to the line in front of us and racing off by himself on a Fat Bike!

Great job on race all things considered

Thanks! I heard people cheering me on, “Yeah! Go fatbike!!!”, and stuff like that. It was tough keeping up a sprint pace on the first 1.25 miles out to the dirt part. I’ll be racing my fatbike at Sea Otter in 2014, hopefully I’ll be on time to the start though. I was late for my start back in 2011 also, was waiting for my wife and kids to finish up in the porta potty but they took too long. I was riding a “normal” bike though (Santa Cruz Superlight) that year.
