    What's up with the big hole in the lower VPP linkage?

    I replaced the rear triangle of my Bronson C this morning (rock garden crash led to cracked seatstay. I place the blame squarely on the bike design, because it made me feel confident enough to ride stuff I normally wouldn't )

    In doing this, I noticed a big ol' hole in the middle of the lower VPP link, between the grease ports. It has a custom rubber plug in it, but that's easily removable. Tallboy LTc has the same hole. It's visible in this photo from BikeRadar:

    So out of curiosity:
    1) What's this for?
    2) Might SC or an enterprising 3rd party design a link protector/rock guard that bolts into this hole, and protects the carbon lower pivots of the rear triangle? Kinda like what Niner did on the RIP9 RDO:
