What Coil Spring Rate and Length for a 2008 Nomad?

What spring rate and length would be best on a 2008 Nomad (med) with a Fox DHX 5.0 (8.5 x 2.5) shock with a rider weight of 180 - 190 lbs? Also does a Ti spring perform the same as a Steel spring?

    Thanks

    Todd

Im 220 geared up and have a 550lbs on the DHX5 for my nomad. At 180-190 you may want to go for a 500? Im sure you will get plenty of input from guys your weight on this.

I have both steel and Ti springs for it - the Ti is more linear so to me feels a little softer. Steel ramps up a bit more so is firmer in the latter part of the stroke.

Personally I like the feel of the Ti spring - plus the obvious weight advantages.

Are you considering any air options? What type of riding will you be doing?

I'm 200# w/o gear & I ride a 500# spring on my 06 Nomad. You may be able to go down to a 450# or stick with the 500#. Make sure and try both before you spend the dough on a Ti spring. I think you can still get steel springs direct from Fox for like $30.

i'm in that same 180-190 range. my nomad frame came with a 450lbs spring and once built up it was clear that it is too light. sitting on the bike to measure sag, i get a full inch of compression 9i guess that is close to 40%?). way too much. it should be closer to .75" according to santa cruz. they are sending me a 500lb spring to test out so we will see how that works out.

    2.25" x 450 Lbs x 125mm Free Length
    2.25" x 500 Lbs x 125mm Free Length
    3" x 450 Lbs x 162mm Free Length

none of them. you want a 2.5-2.8 (if it's a fox spring) for an 8.5" X 2.5" shock. the 2.25" is for the 7.875" X 2.25" and/or 2.00" so it's too shrt. again fox coil for this size shock would be labeled 2.35". the 3.0" spring is going to be way too long.

if you are getting a rock shox spring look for the 2.5/2.75" in the correct weight.

as for all other springs (except a fox) look for a 2.5". Fox labels differently than other manufacturers.
