    Top tube protection from shifters and brakes on Carbon Tallboy... Any Solutions?

    Top tube protection from shifters and brake levers... Any Solutions?
    Been riding 29ers for about 5 years and recently moved to a carbon tallboy for xc racing. This is the first 29er that I have had where I have run into the issue of my handlebar/shifters/etc being able to whack my top tube during a wreck. I guess it makes me nervous that this is my first carbon mtn bike (I have road and cross bikes that are carbon so I am not worried about carbon failure)

    I know I am not the only one out there with this problem... so what are your solutions?

    #1 - I can raise the bar high enough to clear the cockpit and have a less aggressive position
    #2 - I can loosen the levers so they would cause minimal damage... not my preference
    #3 - I can wrap the area of top tube that would get hit with some kind of protective tape
    #4 - I can forget about it and let the top tube take the damage and worry about it later...

    I only ask this as I am going to be racing hard on this bike for the next couple years and I tend to push the envelop while racing and wreck a bit more than if I were just out for a ride.

    i would imagine that your bars/shifters/levers would break long before your frame would. cant imagine those things causing much damage to your TT aside from some superficial scratches.

    That said, option 3 seems like the best call if you dont want to change your geometry. clear frame tape is pretty thick, doesnt detract from the look and can easily be replaced.

    How much would you have to raise your bars? If it isn't a lot, give it a try. I used to use an aggressive position with the bars a good 4" below the saddle height. Now I've gone to having the bars pretty much even with saddle height. With the higher bars you can always just bend your arms for a more aggressive position and for climbing, and the somewhat higher bars work better for the technical stuff and descending.

    Frameskins would help.
    I have some on my nomad and it protects it well in crashes.

    I can't post links as I have less than ten posts but do a quick Google search for it.

    My bars are even with my saddle right now and nothing contacts the toptube. I would love to drop to maybe an inch below. Thinking top tube protector may be only good option at this point. How thick is the frame skin?

    Frameskin is similar to those cable rub protector patches.
    It comes in big pre cut shapes for your particular frame. The full kit does top tube, down tube, seat stays,and chain stays. It also comes with smaller patches for all the cable rub points.

    I ordered a Frameskin kit for my new Tallboy, but now I'm wondering whether it is necessary. I added some chainstay protection and a few cable rub patches, plus the cytoe downtube protector, and I'm not sure if anything more is necessary.

    That's what my friend said when installing a kit on his Blur XC carbon. Few weeks later he scratched the seat stay which wasn't covered

    Or go to the car window tint shop and see if they will sell you some of their rock chip guard (3M Bara I think it's called). Cut to fit whatever you are looking to protect.

    I just raised my bars to the lowest height where they wouldn't hit.

    Protective tape would be better than nothing, but before I raised my bars I got a nice little depression in the top tube. I'm not sure how much tape would've helped. You really need something strong enough to spread out the load, like a piece of hard plastic or metal.

    Man, I don't know about this assessment... On an aluminum frame, this is typically the thinner part of the frame. Clearly, more material may be used on a plastic frames to achieve the strength, but I've been some pretty nice dents on the TT from bar and lever and not a bit of damage on the bar/lever.

    I put a 2" diameter clear plastic hose cut about 3" wide around the spot the bars/levers hit. I got the idea from my fixie/track bike. did't want to spend the 25 bucks for a fancy one they make for the fixie and the tubing cut down the middle easily ply's over the TT with no need to zip tie etc on both . It is hardly noticeable. about 35 cents at your local hardware store

    not bling and if posting pics of your bike here on mtbr is the primary usage like most here than you might want to pass because it certainly aint uber bling and you might get flamed

    I keep it on all the time because for me the risk of shop wear dings moving it around is high as well
    Why are there so many threads about cheap ass bikes?

    If you havent already, try to only tighten the brake and shifter just enough not to move with your use but loose enough to move on a crash.

    If you are that worried about the bars, try using a grip with a soft end.

    I have my bars high enough that they do not touch, Im not convinced that an agressive riding position on a MTB is really worth the risk of damage for the average racer.

    Perhaps this is a solution:
    BLOCKLOCK - ACROS
    Don't know if they allready have a fitting top for the Tallboy though...
    The Ai-22 does have a 44mm cup size, guess it could work.

    I know very well the thread argument: just a month ago I damaged my carbon frame in a fall (shift levers against the top tube).
    Waiting for my new ordered bike (even carbon), I looked for solutions to the problem, and I found this:

    Does Frameskin need to be removed and replaced after a certain amount of time/usage? Would it affect the paint on removal?
