    Tallboy LT and LTc Owners Thread

    Last Wednesday I placed an order for a Tallboy LT, SPXAM kit with custom paint (satin black/red blockface graphics) and the estimated 3 week wait is KILLING ME. Literally.

    Anyhow what did the rest of you order and how long is your estimated wait until arrival?

    Any planned immediate mods?

    I ordered a Tallboy LTc, size L, black/orange... 2 weeks ago. Delivery time between mid of May and of of june . No kit for the moment. Will probably go with a full XTR group and brakes, Revelation 140mm DA, ZTR wheels, Reverb, Crank Brothers Iodine or Cobalt Carbon handlebar... nearly the same as my Blur TRc bike

    Good thread! Hopefully this will be the picture thread once the bikes are coming through?

    I ordered my matt carbon/orange LTc on April 2nd with a delivery estimated to be end of May.

    I haven't decided if I'm going to swap the XTR, bars, stem, reverb etc off my Nickel or go for a complete new build but I'm planning on using Float 140's, Mavic TN718 rims with Hope hubs and possibly a 1x10 setup.

    Deposit down on a black/orange with Fox 34. Should be here for the end of May. (Scotland)

    Most kit transferred from my current bike - reverb, flow/pro2, Salsa bars, SLX 36/22, XT 10 speed but I may gt a new XTR Plus mech.

    I don't understand . . . . all three of you make it sound as if you ordered just the frame, yet I didn't think that was possible yet . . . confused.

    Or are you just getting a kit and selling off parts?

    As far as I was/am aware it's possible, seeing as I've put money down on the first batch of frames to enter the UK, maybe my dealer is being a bit over zealous though?!

    People ordered the frame, myself included, when they first announced it. They were saying they would be out early May. It even said so on their website.

    Then, as I'm sure you'll recall, they suddenly said only the full bikes were coming out and due to huge demand frame-only would be coming months later.

    So there are people who have ordered the frame, just waitin... and waitin... and waitin... for it to come out eventually. Myself included

    My lbs has ordered a full bike and done me a deal on the frame, frok, headset and reverb. The rest is going onto another customers 'normal' Tallboy frame with some 120mm forks.

    Bonking ... not feelin' well

    Its been about two weeks for me and I'm waiting on a regular carbon Tallboy. I made the order two day before the "april fools" thing was announced. My bike still is not in yet. Santa Cruz says they are backed up on all the Tallboys, high demand!

    However, even though I ordered the SPX kit I'm considering the LTc now. I'll have to put it up for sale for what I paid for it. I say that because I'm sure the local shop would not be happy with it sitting around his shop. I must admit I haven't discussed it with him though, he just might help me out. I'm kinda unsure what to do? Should I keep this regular blk red Tallboy or get the LTc. What do you all think? Don't you hate sometimes when new stuff comes out. Ahh what to do...

    Is there a way to keep track of the status of the order? Can you just call or email S/C and have them give you an update on the estimated delivery date? Or do people just bug the LBS. I have never been the early adopter type, its an unusual process, and dosn't work well with my inner 5-year old who demands toys now.

    To Rev.14, if your bike has still not been built or delivered could you not just cancel the tallboy lt order and switch it to a ltc?

    I bought my Tallboy carbon w/ SPX kit on 3/29/12, just a few days before the announcement of the LTc. But, I fully knew they were going to release the LTc and didn't want a longer travel bike.

    I say consider what type of trails you ride. Longer travel doesn't always mean better. Additionally, the LTcs are coming in around 3/4 lb heavier with similar SPX build (actually over 1 lb heavier than the regular Tallboy carbon if you go with the 34 float 140 fork on the LTc).

    With all that said, if you really need the longer travel LTc, you should get it. Nothing is worse than spending $4K - $5K+ on something that is not exactly what you are looking for. You should check w/ your dealer and see if they will allow you to exchange. I know mine wouldn't have any issues doing the exchange. They move a TON of Santa Cruz bikes and could quickly sell mine to another buyer if I didn't want it.

    I ordered an xl carbon with red/orange , (I'm colorblind) frame on 4/1 was told to expect it end of May perhaps early June.

    Ordered my medium Black Tallboy LT yesterday. Was quoted three weeks from Santa Cruz. Plan to put the new Crank Brothers drop post and some custom wheels to start.

    Well, I just Demo'd the TB-LT up here at Sea Otter . . . lets just get it out of the way, but I was blown away by this bike. It is simply put, quite fantastic. I currently ride a Blur LT and this was my first ride on a 29er, and I had to remind myself that I was indeed on a 29er. This thing flies and it rails turns. Although the demo run was short (probably less than 5 miles, but at least it was single track) and didn't include any tech or chunk, the route was fast and flowed well, and the TB-LT handled it with ease. It did not at all feel like I was riding a 29er and was VERY comparable to my BLT2 in terms of handling.

    I know what my next bike will be. No doubt about that.

    Did I miss something but has anyone notice the price on all the TB carbons seem to have increased? I purchased a TBc SPX and it seems to be the MSRP went up from what it was when I placed my order. Still considering an LTc too before mine arrives, the question is can I wait until next month for it to come in?

    For the record, it ain't mine and no I didn't steal it. It's one of the early prototype test bikes. Had an opportunity to ride it for a few minutes.

    Yes, actually I did notice that. At the booth, the prices on (some of) the tags were scratched out and written over at Sea Otter, so whatever its due to, it happened really recently.

    Frames!!!

    I almost pulled the trigger on one, but I've decided to wait for the framesets. I want to build up a 2x10 setup with I9's and stans rims, so now it's killing me. how long will I have to wait? Come on SC, I want a frame, badly,

    Indeed, this is his bike.

    As for a review, well i rode it around the parking lot and not on any trails so I can't say but it felt like it'd be a super fun bike to rip on

    Has anyone else noticed that the TB LT & TB TLc package deal prices aren't consistent?

    TB LT with Ram29 kit is $3199, frame only is $1999 so build kit cost is $1200.
    TB LTc with Ram29 kit is $4399, frame only is $2699 so build kit cost is $1700.

    $500 difference in build kit cost.

    TB LT with SPXam29 kit is $4299, frame only is $1999 so build kit cost is $2300.
    TB LTc with SPXam29 kit is $5299, frame only is $2699 so build kit cost is $2600.

    $300 difference in build kit cost.

    Noticed that earlier today as well.

    Also-
    If you do the LT-A SPX kit in bike builder with the Revelation 29 RCT3 it shows up correctly at $4299. If you add custom paint it goes up to $4899 not the 600 dollar jump not the 300 the CCCP is supposed to cost.

    Chalking up to website error at this point, still waiting on my LT-A with CCCP, confident the LBS will go to bat for me on the price listed on the website when I placed the order $4599, any more expensive and I'd order the carbon.

    I ordered a Large LTc on April 2 from my lbs. Like others we were told we had to buy a complete bike. My man at the shop is selling me the frame and fox 34 fork, and is using the rest of the kit for another bike he's building. He said mid to late May.

    I ordered mine in matte black and orange, but have to say the yellow is growing on me. Not ready to switch the order, but I definitely dig it.

    The yellow is a great looking bike, but man the White AL with Orange lettering is sweet too. The gunmetal grey on the AL is kinda bland. Didn't see any orange and black carbons though.

    Are those L frames? Seems that every pic of the LT has been a large frame, don't think I've spotted an xl yet... Thanks for the review too, it was great. What I would give to go to sea otter...

    Think TB LT owners should have an official anthem. For now, I propose this:

    The yellow one was definitely a large, and I think the white one was too, just not sure. I demo'd a medium and I ride a medium BlurLT, and the fit was good. They DID have an XL TB-LT available to demo . . . but the line for that was looooong.

    In all seriousness, when we were there, my buddy asked to demo the XL Tallboy LT and he was told it was available to to sign in for the wait. There were a few other names on the list waiting for the same demo, and at an hour a piece, he opted to run a Nomad instead. So truth be told, never actually SAW the XL frame . . . just told it was available. Kinda seems a bit of a fast turn around to get an XL frame out considering they very recently decided to make one.

    I think I saw it briefly, but there were like 2 people ahead of me waiting for an XL. Nomad turned out to be a good ride though

    Sure did notice this. Also noticed that all their carbon prices went up across the board even on the regular TBc. I've been hearing different stories about why but not sure. I do know that SC has nailed the 29er FS so well in carbon that the wait is over a month on them. Could be demand is so high and the way they build their frames in one piece, not like the other companies, probably takes time. IDK, just my 2 cents...

Could be demand is so high and the way they build their frames in one piece, not like the other companies, probably takes time. IDK, just my 2 cents...
    the pricing on the package deal completes when using the CCCP builder had a code glitch, and was tacking an extra $300 onto everything. sorry about that. should be fixed now and showing the correct pricing for everything. good catch thanks to fine forum folk!

    as for the carbon prices, EVERYTHING is getting more expensive at the vendor end of things. raw materials are costing more, labor costs are skyrocketing, energy costs likewise. you might notice that several other bike brands also went through some re-pricing, due to the same factors. it's not confined to the bike industry either. global economics at work. sorry about that as well, but it's not nearly as easy to remedy as a code glitch on our bike builder.

    I rode the XL with XTR Triple, 34 and Reverb down trail 50 at Ft. Ord. It used to be the opening single track (conga line) for the XC Course.     I did unfortunately have to climb back to Laguna Seca via Barloy Canyon Rd. (Otter road race finishing climb) due to the XC race coming down the singletrack that I wanted to climb back to the track on. I sat and spun the big-ring up all but the last 200m without noticing extra weight or susp. movement. Really impressive.

    Upon returning I joked with the fine folks running the demo (great job guy's & gal's!!) about the bike being a gamechanger which IMO was a pretty BIG challenge because the Tallboy is still a rippin' bike. - Everyone smiled and then I said there was one HUGE problem with the bike. I don't want mine at the end of May. I want it now.

    This one like all the other SCB's I've owned over all the years will be WELL worth the wait people. I'll enjoy waiting "on Santa Cruz time" with the rest of you....

    Mine as well as my friends Lt's arrived on Thursday and were ready for pickup on friday morning (thank you Cycle Masters in Turlock). However, I was on a camping trip with the wife and the kids so I didn't really get to try it out yet. Just went to install by GD seat post and realized i didn't have the right shim. I may have to ride like a normal person for a week or two.

    I really wanted to post this on Friday, but didn't have time before I left for the Lake.

    I'm considering selling my SJ to get one of these. Has anyone read any info on why the Aluminum one is 135? I was wondering if they are using a stock Tallboy rear triangle.

    I want an Alum, but I also want the 142. Wondering if they may update at a later date.

    Put about 2.5hrs on it tonight. All in all, I really like it, (that could be because i am trying to justify my purchase though ) I need some time to set up the fork as the pressure tables don't seem to suit my riding style very well. Once I had it in plush mode i was having a blast. The tire choice is iffy (at least where I was riding).

    I think the coolest thing was that, since I don't have my dropper post on it yet, I was actually pretty comfortable riding all but 2 sections with the seat up at about my highest climbing position. I am a wee portly and tend to eat it with the seat up, so this was a bonus.

    I have been riding a Remedy 9 with the 36 talas as well as all of the other goodies, and I was able to clean a few nasty climbs on the TBLT that I have a 50/50 record of on the Remedy. I would say that is a pretty good start to the relationship. (could be new bike syndrome, but I don't care)/

    Can't wait to put the dropper on and see what kind of trouble I get in to.

    The Dropper has been installed. Looked online at the fork manual and figured out how to set the front to my liking. Heading to the local enduro area tonight for test run #2. Sat i am meeting with 3 riders who are a whole lot better than i for our first High Sierra adventure of the season. Pics and Fish stories to come.

    Our local shop wasn't open until Tuesday the 3rd, or I would have ordered on that Sunday the 1st. I am pretty sure it was on that tuesday, but no later than Wed the 4th. My friend ordered his the same time. I am not sure if it makes a difference or not, but the shop I go too is only about 125 miles from Santa Cruz. Another buddy just picked up a carbon nomad from directly from their HQ.

    So the LT made it's first "real" ride of the season. 20 miles with 2500 ft of climbing. Would have been more, but there was too much snow above 7000ft. The trail we were trying to get to starts at 8600, so we ended up turning around and making our way to one that tops out at about 6,800i. It's still is a little early in the season, but hey, we had to try.

    Climbing: All of my serious climbing has been on 26" wheels so there is some adjustment, but I climbed everything and I mean everything, in the middle or big ring (and I am not all that strong of a climber), so I am pretty sure this bike passes that test.

    Descending: I didn't magically become any better than I was the last time I rode this trail, but I did clear everything that I have previously cleared on my Remedy (with the exception of 1 really long shoot) the first time on it, and even cleaned a climb that has about a 3 ft rock face (which I have never cleaned before.( Had I had a pair big enough to get off the brakes and let the bike do what it was meant to, there is no doubt the bike would have done it.) My friend Bruce who also bought the bike, pinned it. He was tearing everything up. His previous 29er was a 5" travel Ventana, and he swears this bike is a big step up. He is very happy too.

    Still not overly impressed with the front tire, however, it is a awesome rear tire, so I am not sure if it's because of me, or the tire.I have been riding Nevegals for so long i may be traction spoiled.

    Kick Ass way to start the season. Hopefully the snow melts and I can put a few good beatings in on this soon.

    Want to go back tomorrow, may have bribe my wife with something fancy,

    Just demo'd the LTc, and here's my $0.02.

    First, the sizing... I'm on a large BLTc, but demo'd the med TB LTc. I wanted to ride the large, but screwed up...ran to my car to get my CC and got sent to the back of the line. Actually, I think this little "denial" was a blessing in that the med felt GREAT! I took a look online at the geo and found my lrg BLTc's TT was 23.5", and the med TB LTc's TT was 23.1. Both bikes w/ a 90mm stem and the TB didn't feel cramped at all! I'm thinking a 100mm stem will resolve any sort of reach issue and get me into the ideal length whereas a large would put me at using roughly an 80mm stem...

    The ride.
    Well, everything they said about the larger wheels is true. It's just a touch harder to start it rolling, but once there, not as difficult to keep it there because the trail chunder just slows it down less....yeah the roll-over ability. The traction was also STOOPID! If any of you know about Apex on the CO Front Range, you know it's a chunder-fest w/ a variety of loose jagged baby-heads and sand/dust covered slabs at the steepest portion JeffCo Open Space placed to reduce erosion. On my BLTc and my MK1 Nomad, both would spin-out on these pitches. I plowed the TB LTc into every one of these pitches to get a feel of its traction. On one in particular, I decided to slow my roll on the pitch to see how the traction was, but stalled out. So, you know what a PITA starting up again mid-steep pitch can be...my demo's front end didn't even hint at rising, and the thing just scooted on up with minimal body-English! I was stunned!

    Downhill
    During the lift operation season, I ride DH...typically high speed flow the blues, or just hang out on the blacks and jump lines all day. Just saying I know how to bend frames in turns. I did NOT feel the TB LTc's frame, wheel (some WTB mfg'd wheelset), or fork (Fox Float 34?) flex at all. I think the rear shock needed more air since less than a foot drop off water-bars got more than 95% rear travel...didn't bottom tho. Despite the smaller frame, the bike was very stable at speed in the Apex chunder, but with the advantage of allowing me to use more body-English (flick)...I think why I buzzed my butt a couple of times In a (off-camber) turn, it felt like a well carved turn on a fat-ski! There was no hint of steering lag due to the larger wheel. Like OO7 said, you'd totally forget you were on bigger wheels! This is only true until you roll into chunder...29ers are VERY well suited for ppl who likes to plow into rocks on the downs! The bike was VERY neutral in the air...I had on flats and ran my demo bike like I'd ride my DH bike...surprised a couple of other TB demo-ers when I passed them My ride needed some anti-seize here and there, but generally took what I dished out w/o any drama.

    Finally, my legs were pretty shot from a road ride up Lookout Mountain yesterday...the same hill climb the US Pro Cycling Tour went up while buzzing around Golden, CO...only I did it in 4x their duration due to my lack of fitness from (grad) school work. But I swear, the pace I was able to sustain on the TB LTc was close to twice that of my BLTc! I climbed better, spun-out less (despite the crappy demo WTB tires), and was just able to keep rolling longer between stops. When (yeah, not if) I order mine this coming fall/winter, I think I would keep to the medium. The thinking is the benefits of the smaller frame on tech/chunder trails. I can get used to 0.4" of reach for long smooth trails, but having the whip-ability of a smaller frame when the trail gets dicey would supersede long haul comfort any day...at least for me and my home terrain.

    I did make it out again but not back up to the high country. I made it to Red Hills (about 25 miles from my house) last night from about 9:00 to 11:00 or so (had to try out the new night gear ). It's more of a super enduro, straight up and down for 100 to 300 ft of elevation covered in nasty rocks and hard no matter what your doing, rather than the climb for a few thousand feet and bomb down (which is more like Saturday's ride was). Its beginning to feel like it's "My Bike". I really like climbing on this bike. and I was probably way too comfortable and cruising at speeds I had no business at night, by myself, but it was just too much damn fun. I didn't get home and have everything put away until Midnight. I had to be up at 4:30 this morning. ( i would do it all again too). Bike on the Mind

    As far as Bruce goes, i do not believe he is on here. He just got on to FB and by his own admission he's not all that computer savvy, but damn can that guy ride.

    So, unless I have something really groundbreaking to report, I think I will quiet down until everyone else's bikes start to come in. It will be more fun when we are all comparing. Just thought I would share in my childish giddiness, but I don't want that to cross that line where it may be confused with gloating or hijacking a thread that I am still very exited about. If you have any direct questions I will share what little I know (with an emphasis on "little"), but I won't bore you with anymore local ride reports. (the hight sierra one's may still end up on here though).

    I really look forward to when more bikes start showing up on here.

    I have a BLT2 and my "back yard" have some twisty trail. Short, twisty, step trails what do you think of the LT on that type of terrain?? I have some difficulty to trade the BLT2 is a fantastic bike.

    This is my "back yard" the camera don't show the terrain, but is slippery, with roots, some rocks and step.

    thanks for the pics. from those pictures id have gone with the black, but I bet that blue looks a lot better in real life. lookin forward to fully built up pics and spec list.

    I hate website color shots.

    The picture on Specialized doesn't do the candy red on my Stumpy any justice either and I'd4 think it'd be hard to make candy red look like ****, but Spec managed to.

    I've seen the "Blue" in person and I tell you what, if you told me it was white I'd have believed you. Its such a pale color that its almost non-existent. This is not to say, however, that it doesn't look good because in my opinion, it looks better than the grey.
    Alcohol may lead nowhere, but it sure is the scenic route!

    Just got the LT home. Thanks to the guys at Speedgoat for the hookup and great service. I won't try to comment on the ride until later this weekend but I will say built up she is a beauty. The Ram Kit is perfect for my needs and come with many good parts. Actually I did not see anything I have to change right away. Only thing we did was throw on my pedals and converted it to tubeless. Last pic is of the just retired ride.

    I said I wouldn't bring up anymore local rides, but I made it up to the sierra's again after work. Rode one of my favorite traidls 3x. All I can say is F-Yeah. I made 2 nasty spots clean for the first time ever. I have tried them over and over on 3 previous bikes and I cleaned them for the first time tonight. One of which was a stupid sharp switchback with around a 2 ft drop in the turn before you can straighten out. (not my specialty, and i have went OTB a few times before and do not particularly like it).

    Then to top it off each climb out was done in the big chain ring. Granted, i was pushing pretty hard, but it was sustainable for 30 min at a time.

    Including last weekends ride, I have put about 50 miles and about 8000 ft of climbing.

    I have previously voiced my concern on the front tire, but it did alright the last two rides, but I have it aired down stupid low. So low that every time i squeeze the tire, I know it's probably a bad idea, but it has gripped reasonably well since, (still think I am going to change it though). I have also questioned the big chain ring (which I wacked about 10x tonight, but I also used it to climb the fire road 3x tonight. Last year on my remedy, I would try to make it in the 2nd ring and could never make the whole climb without hitting the small ring. 3x tonight in the 3rd ring. having a hard time getting my head around that (could be the tire i don't like .

    I forgot the camera tonight and my phone stinks so maybe pics next time.

    Sorry for blabbering, just way too excited. wish I could ride this weekend, but I have to be a husband, father, and Son.

    After a hoping all week for my LBS to call saying my LT had come in, I dropped in yesterday. Not only was it not there, but they were not sure if it had even shipped yet. So much for doing the whole CCCP thing to get it quickly. Bought a 2012 reverb post to cure the desire for an immediate upgrade.

    Anyhow the wait continues - in the meantime digging the PICS and ride reports from the bikes already in. The light blue looks sweet. Keep the pics and ride reports coming.

    Hey guys. I'm ready to pull the trigger on a tallboy, but I can't decide which one. The Tallboy C or the LTc. I'm only allowed one bike, which of the two is the most versatile? For those who own/have ridden both. If you had your choice, which way would you go and why? I know this might sound like a really vague question, but I've been through the pros and cons on each in my own head for far too long. I need a new perspective. Thanks guys.

    You need to give a little more info. Where do you ride? What kind of riding do you mostly do? XC or AM?

    I own a regular Tallboy carbon medium. It is a very capable bike and I love it.
    I have tested a LTc medium this past weekend. Very, very nice bike
    Honestly, i couldnt feel that much of a difference while climbing with the 140 fork. I use on steep climbs Talas at 95 on my TB.
    The LT is very playfull, the chain stays are a bit longer, but again, hardly noticable difference. The good thing if you are shorter - Stand over hight on LT is lower.
    Another + -> Higher bottom bracket. Regular TB suffers from pedal stirkes.
    And of course - 135mm travel in the back = more capable on DH.

    But, the LT is going to be heavier, specially the 140mm fork, and also the frame.

    If I have to choose, I would peobably get the LT.

    Probably going to be hard to get unbiased recomendations in the LT ownersthread. That being said LT all the way
