I test rode the Blur twice on real trails when looking for a new frame. It was either going to be that or a Superlight. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't convince myself that it was all that and a bag of chips, I just didn't think it was that over the top great ride that everyone else seems to experience. It felt too sluggish in the twisties for my tastes. It is a good bike no doubt - probably very good. But the Superlight was just more fun to drive. Plus the Superlight has a been there, done that simple proven design.

I think the Superlight is still an awesome bike.

I Loved & Rode the snot outta both of my SL's but they were a little flexy for my 205 pound frame. Totally setup to your preferences the Blur is over the top.....And if your not setup spot on it does make a bigger difference on the Blur over the SL.
I still have an OG Tazmon (wish I never sold my 1st one) that I'll be putting together soon just to have around....I've always liked that bike over the SL. :D

Apparently, it is no longer hip or fashionable to love or ride a Superlight since the much balyhooed Blur hit the scene. Which, of course is good for me, as I am neither hip nor fashionable. Viva la Superlight!

    - x317/Hugi240/DT Revolution
    - Avid mech

    - Old school XTR rear d.

There were times when I rode almost every day, and this baby never let me down. This one's definitely a keeper!

I was looking for something that would have a a more active rear end, and had 5" on both ends. I ended up with the Heckler. Actually, it is only a little more active than the superlight, but it soaks up big hits and drops far better. The geometry is also better suited for flying off of things than the superlight. I am a little surprised I bought another single pivot bike. Hey, it is a good design that is reliable and it works. I am running a Z1 FR on it, though I am probably going to switch to a TALAS for the sharper steering and more efficient ride. I hope the buttery-smooth, bottomless (and taller) Z1 has not spoiled me when hell breaks loose on the way down the mountain.

sometimes its in the serial number. But I can tell you that by the rear triangle it is a 2000 or 2001.

Supposedly SC doesn't have model years but there are changes. For instance the rear triangle changed around 02 I think. And the decal scheme changes. I was just curious because of the decals on yours.

It's an '03, been riding her for more than a year now. And I've been riding it with 5th airs since the beginning. It's a progressive test bike and that's a proto nickel plated 5th air. We showed them at interbike last year but there's durability issues with nickel plating so for now its not going to make it into production. There's only two functioning nickel shocks left, that one and the one I built for my blur project bike. I pushed hard for them to produce them but anodizing is proven and nickel is not. If you want it, call and say you saw it at interbike and want to know when it's coming out. Maybe if there's enough interest they (management) will make it happen.

    How does it ride?
I take it that you work for progressive. I have heard that there has been a lot of problems with the shock. How does the riding of the Blur and Superlight compare?
I was thinking about upgrading but seems like a lot for a shock that has had a lot of problems.
  • 04-08-2004
    Ultra Magnus
Let's put it this way. I've been riding the Superlight and love it, but I'm building for myself a Blur (also nickel shock :))

the 5th air has had a few startup problems but most are behind us and the rest have solutions that are in process. The precentage of warranty returns are pretty low, higher than we'd like, but reasonable for a new product. One MAJOR issue has been consumer education. Over half the air leak and oil leak warranty reaturns were for shocks that have nothing wrong with them. You may know, that when you remove the pump from the IFP chamber there's no air loss, but when you reinstall the pump, due to the small IFP volume, the air entering the pump, filling the hose and guage cause a significant pressure loss (20-50%, it varies). Also, the "oil" on the strut of the shock was a clear super slippery assembly grease that has the consistency of honey and would slowly weep past the negative air seals. We've since made strides to educate consumers regarding proper air fill procedures, and we've changed greases that we lube our air seals with. For the record, it has been months since I've checked the air in my shock and it still works perfectly. I loose air in my tires faster than my shock. On the superlight, I run 110psi in the main chamber, and 50-60 in the IFP. I'm 6'2" 190#...

Hi, I picked up my anodized orange superlight a few weeks back at a local bike shop.
It was sold used, but looks almost brand new. The owner did not know the year of
the bike. It has disc brake tabs at the rear, non replaceable derailer hanger.
I hope you experts can give me some info about the superlight I bought.

One more thing, my bike weighs in a scant 24.5lbs, before I upgraded to the heavier
shimano M324 multi-purpose pedals.. I'm thinking of adding disc brakes, but am
worried that may add a pound to the overall weight. Heh, I can stand to lose several
times that in body fat :).

Yes, it is a large. I'm 5"8' and it fits me perfectly. I know medium is my size, but I feel

I never rode the Blur but after riding this I don't feel the need. I went from an 02 NRS to this and man what a difference. I clean everything I used to walk, just point the bike and hold on. I tried locking out the rear on climbs and that might as well not even be an option, I bounced more with the rear rigid than I did with it unlocked. At 6'1" and 180 pounds this bike has no noticeable flex or bob and I would recommend to anyone looking for a XC rig.

    Weight of your superlight
Hi Guys, I was just checking out the thread on weight of the new Blurs.
Some of those blurs weigh 27-28lbs, as much as my friend's Heckler.
To be fair, there is a guy with a 22.x lbs Blur, but most people are at 25+lbs.
How much does your Superlight weight?

I have mostly XTR components with Propel wheel set and avid ti v brakes.
I weighed my bike on two different scales and it comes in at 24.5lbs.
    Size of frame is L.

I think i am in the right place...
    Hey all,

Im thinking about picking up an SL this summer. I want know the nitty gritty about it. What dont you like about it? and...that...that.....ughh...that irreplaceable droput!?.

Im 165Lbs, and will be racing casually and trail riding with 2-3 foot drops max. (note: im not a hucker..when i mean drop i mean flying over obstacles and stuff.)

Think this will give me what i need?>

    Cheers

It's probably best to start a new thread. Also be sure to search this forum because you will find some good info - usually in a Blur v. SL or a SL or Heckler type discussion. As for the dropouts, and this is pretty much from what SC says, since it's not the two-piece type dropout, it is much stronger. And I've never heard of anyone breaking it on a SL. I think it could also be bent back if needed. After all these years, I think if it was a problem we would hear more complaints on this forum or SC would change the design. The SL is arguably one of the best XC designs ever made. Good luck with your SL purchase ;)

Last Pictures before I have to sell her
I'm moving to Minnesota for med school, and I know I wont have much time to ride.
So I'm thinking I'm going to have to sell her. I just wanted to post some pics of her so I
could look at her during the freezing winters that my Nor Cal A$$ wont be used to.

    The specs.
King head set, King wheel set, Thompson stem, Push'd Fox shock for a (170-190) rider.
Brand new WTB Ti saddle. Hope Mini Mono disc breaks. Marz MX Pro w/ ETA 2004
fork. Carbon handle bars. 8spd XT drive train.

    She was so much fun.

Continental Vapor front and Geax Sturdy rear.
I have had the Vapor on my SS and have quite liked it as a front tyre.
Cannot go past the Sturdy as a rear tyre for over here in Australia on the trails I ride.

Thanks. I didn't notice the Sturdy on the rear :o What size is it? The Sturdy is actually on my list for my next tire purchase for my hardtail. Would you say it rolls pretty well on hardpack/pavement? [I've a road ride to the trailhead and use the same bike for commuting to work]

Sturdy is a 2.1 if that is what you mean.
    Superlight is a Large.

Sturdy rolls just fine on hardpack and pavement.
Tough tyres too. I have had that tyre on my bikes on and off for over 2 years and it is still in great condition. Cannot kill them with a stick.
Very tall sidewall too which seems to help stop pinch flats.

    Just bought a Superlight
I have been looking into a Blur. I have tested a SL and Blur and Intense. They are no longer making the regular Blurs they are all XC. I only need a frame. Based on a lot of investigating and COST I bought a SL. Everyone raves about its climbing which is what I want. The Blur is awesome also, and maybe better on the downhill. The cost difference was 700.00.
Not only that, in my area there were no Blurs my size and it would have been a 8 week wait. I am stripping my Spec. Epic. I'm happy, it is silver anodized. With the less cost I can lighten it up even more with a new seat post and handlebars and adding travel to my forks.

    :)

    Short-term Superlight love
Only had 'Kermit' for a couple weeks but loved every ride. Got the frame as the Blur XC I ordered wasn't going to make it in time for the TransRockies. Count Stylie (the NZ importer) gave me this XL Apple Green beauty to use for the race. All I can say was that it was a magic bike that had no problems, climbed incredibly well and decended like a champ. I just hope the Blur XC will match the high benchmark set by Kermit!

Anyone else running Kenda's 2.1 Nevegals in the rear and getting rubbing on the seat stays? I think my crummy deore wheels have bad dish, or, anyone ever bent their rear triangle?

Here's a obligatory pict of the ride --loving it nonetheless!

    Rubbage
I had some rub marks from the Nevegals on the seatstays for sure. I was running the 1.95 version so I would imagine the 2.1 would rub for sure.

im about to buy a Fox DHX Air 5.0 to put on the rear of my circa 99-00 superlight!!! cant wait to feel the difference from my Vanilla RC rear shock. i just got confirmation from scott @ santa cruz that the size should be 7.875 x 2.0, but a 2.25 will fit but squeezed.

just some good data for the db.

What made you decide to put a DHX air on it? I thought the biggest advantage of the DHX shocks was the bottoming control, but with the riding I did on my Superlight I never had a problem with bottoming a Float RC (which is more progressive than a vanilla). I'm not saying a DHX air is a bad idea, but it's a fairly heavy (for an air shock) and quite expensive shock, so I'm curious why you chose it.

That said, I would die for one on my Heckler right now.
