    Love the yellow!

A $350 impulse buy on a clearance frame and a bunch of (mostly) spare parts later, I now have this:

    - Fox 32 TALAS 140mm 15QR fork
    - X0 cranks and 180F/160R brakes
    - Mavic EX 721 laced to Chris King hubs w/ DT Comps

And a matching navy blue King BB and headset on order!

Bike is dope how you like it with the SS setup and 140 fork? I have a 2013 model coming with a 150 revelation SS setup so it should be similar except you have super balling wheels. Under 22lbs?

I've been sitting on this for a while now with plans to build it up into a single-speed but nevr followd through. Actually, it's been assembled numerous times, I just have bad knee/wrists problems and never got to ride it. I figured I'd post it up for you guys to enjoy before I list it for sale.

They could definitely use some more stickers on the rims. Not enough I say.

A local buddy painted it and sourced a couple decals from SantaCruz as he rides for a team sponsored by them.

Spower, I love the set up of this bike as a single speed. I have built many of these frames over the years and this one is the best to date. The previous models always felt like a jack hammer to me, this one doesn't. It weighs 23 lbs. even. I could easily save more if I changed the tires but I am enjoying it the way it is.

Satanrules, what size is your frame and how tall are you? Will there be any interference between the frame and the fork if you use a zero stock head sets in there?

The frame is a large, I am about 5'10". You could run a flush bottom with a 1 1/8" fork but not a tapered fork. SC uses a 49mm lower if they used a 56mm you would be all set.

Good to hear that the new model is on point... I was about to get the older model for 350 on the Cruz website but seeing your build and thoughts have justify me spending 750. Plus it's all about the color and the new colors are dope. You should sell me your enve wheels haha are they worth it? so ballin but they would put a dent it my wallet! 23lbs is awesome

unfortunately after redamaging an old shoulder injury i've had to give up serious mtb to keep my shoulder okay for work. so i get home after work each day and my bike's there in the garage tormenting me. so i thought i'd have some fun turning it into something cool to cruise around the city cycleways.

it's a bit of an impractical show pony really, but does ride beautifully. the salsa fork is a 29 length, 470a-c, which gives sweet handling. trouble is now it begs to go rip some singletrack. damn you shoulder!!!

hilarious. no i'm sure it's just a language thing

but hey i checked that link and in the comments a guy (gal?) reckons his 650 wheelset fit his 09 chammy just fine. didn't say what size tyre he was using.

i always thought the 650 thing was a bit whack. however, my chameleon fully-rigid towny build with the 29 fork is such a sweet ride i want to change it again to do more. take those spanking xtr 9sp shifters out their box and get some fast rolling 2.3 rubber for some mtb cruising and touring. so 650 wheels would be ace. having the spare cash to do it would be even better.

hopefully we see a chammy 650 convert here one day.

Finally got to take my bike for its first ride today in the snow. It was a blast to ride and the slacker HA made riding in the snow a lot more stable.

One of my friends was riding her 650b bike and she let me check the fit of her rear wheel in the Chameleon and it cleared the chain stays but not by much. She had a 2.25" RaRa so I think with a 2.1 tire everything should fit perfectly fine.

snow riding, cool, (pun intended). hard to imagine right now after taking my beasty for a 4 hour cycleway tour today in our typical brisbane 30 degree heat (85f). i'd like to see a photo, some posts of lizards in action are really missing here, maybe i should start.

how do you like your bb7s? i wanna get some with 200 rotors for my next backcountry touring mish, i was a bit concerned about my elixirs last summer, it'd suck to have hydraulic issues when way out back.

well i better post a pic to stay on topic. happy new year lizard lovers.

The bb7 are my brake of choice. Because I have multiple bikes and multiple wheel sets the bb7 make it easy to switch wheels between bikes. You just turn the adjusters a couple clicks one way or the other and all the wheels fit all the bikes and no caliper readjustment has to be done. The braking power is fine for me with the stock 160mm rotors. You might just want to try them that way before adding more money into the braking system with the bigger rotors and adapters.

    13' chameleon 650b

Well, she is built and ridden...a little. Ride is great so far, taking her for a longer ride tomorrow to really test the ride quality. Tires are 2.2 WTB wolverines in case you couldn't figure that out. Clearance isn't even close to being an issue on the frame. I went through some really tight singletrack yesterday and it is much quicker handling than my 29ers have been. Guessing the weight at about 22-23 lbs but have not weighed it.

Finished up my first lizard (and my first SC) build:

    Magura Thor fork
    Deity Dirty30 bars
    Straitline stem
    CK headset
Formula RX (180/160) - cracked the front lever clamp and it was cheaper to get complete new front setup (albeit in white) than replace just the lever
Stan's Flow w/ White Industries Venti front hub and Hope Pro 2 Evo rear

    Deity Vendetta 3 crankset
    Deity Embassy BB

There are some awesome rigs in this thread! I have been lurking for nearly a year checking in every now and then ever since I bought a second hand white medium frame. The build goal was a lightish do all bike. I had a GT Ruckus DJ that was an awesome urban/trail/thrash bike, but waaayy to heavy. This build was to emulate the fun nature of the Ruckus in a much lighter but tough package. I actually built it for my better half, but made sure it would also suit me to grab every now and then. I'm also gonna swap out the wheels and possibly brakes soon as I am building yet another rig.

She was slowly built up over the last year from parts I had and good cheap components I found along the way. She was completed just in time for my girls birthday last December, but I have only just taken her out on the trails here in Wellywood New Zealand yesterday. Other then a few control adjustments I'll make, she went superbly! Very nice to ride albeit a little bumpier then my FS bikes, super manoeuvrable, flicks around nicely and works well with the short 50mm stem. I thought I may have prefered an extra degree or so of slacker head angle, but she seemed to be in supreme control down the steepest chutes and tricky terrain I rode. All in all pretty stoked and I look forward to getting a few more k's under it's belt.

Crap, need 10 posts to thrown in a pic. What's that about? Bloody noobs.

Saddle Pimp, your's looks oddly familiar I also picked mine up from the sale. Orange because I don't see many in that color. Built up as a SS on the cheap with parts laying around or traded for. It's my first single speed and I'm having a blast on it.

Got mine a couple years ago for six hundred from Cambria, but that was in November, when they were unloading their old stock for the incoming new stock.

I would keep watching eBay. Every once and a while you can come across a good deal on there. Might have to wait a bit for yellow though.

Here's my 2013 Chameleon. I wanted to build it up as a slightly more aggressive XC bike. So far it feels very nimble and im excited to get some more time on it. The current weight is 22.55 lbs.

Quick question: are the decals on the new Chameleon frames removable?

Anyone know where I can track down a new or used Chameleon frame in size M? Doesn't need to be a 2013. I ride an L and absolutely love it. My neighbor wants to build one up but can't track down a good deal on an M, and $750 for a new one is beyond the budget.

    TIA

I found, on another thread, that one owner's shifters contacted the TT. It was a 2013 model and he had 1.25 cm under the stem. I would post a link but... :P The thread name is 2013 Santa Cruz Chameleon- Ultramarine Blue (Pictures). Do you have the same problem?

I guess it depends on your set up, my bars and/or levers do not contact the TT on the Chameleon 4.

This really is a do it all bike. My friends want to go on a single speed gravel ride tomorrow. So I took the wheels off my 700c cyclocross bike and put them on the Chameleon. For the people asking about bar clearance this bike has about 1.25" of clearance.

2013 Chameleon size XL. Love this bike; didn't know this was what I'd been looking for until I built it.

This bike can take a severe ass-beating and often does. It's the most fun I've had on any bike in 56 years. Did I attach the photo? I can't tell. Very confusing.

Mostly a spare parts build. Great first ride on it, but so much chain slap... shortened the chain one link.

Hi guys.. here's another dark blue lizard, my "Jeans™":

Just got mk.5 frame, feels nicer with slightly longer TT but I like the look of seatstay area of the old one better.
Components are from my old black chameleon 4, except the headset of course..
Also I actually didn't really like the dark blue color, preferred the tennis yellow one.. but after 2nd thought this color is OK and less flashy for occasional commuter / B2W duties. I will be covered in mud on the mountain anyways

    Cheers!

Strongly considering buying Chameleon 4 at VPLS to build it up with parts lying around - have few questions though...

Does it have eccentric bottom bracket ? If yes, what do I need to build it up ? Have Shimano SLX crank with external BB that came with it...

Does it have tapered head tube like current version ? Is there anything else in terms of parts fit I need to know ?

Any discount codes somebody happens to have ?

is does have a eccentric BB, your SLX crank will work just fine.

does not have a tapered head tube it is 1 1/8

    everything else is just standard.

Recently bought this for my first bike, a large SS 04 Root Beer Chameleon.

Doesn't have the newest or shiniest parts, but I'm in love with it. Exploring trails and building skills on this thing has been a blast. Picking up MTBing as a hobby was one of the best decisions of my life.

Looks a lot like my 05 Chameleon that got me deeper into mountain biking. When I think Chameleon, I really picture the ver2 lizards like yours and mine, they're truest to the form about being a versatile do it all bike. Bike is just as good at 100mm of travel as at 140mm. The new ones are just so focused on long travel/slack trail slayers that they're not as true to the name IMO.

    Hi All,
    Origin: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
    Photo taken: Bukit Kiara

Just got this used Chameleon last Saturday nite, swapped the brake & pedal, and hit the trail the next morning.

    My Ride:
Santa Cruz Chameleon shining black (can anyone the which year is the model?)
Probably M size due to measurement made against SC's website (still not sure which year I should refer to)
    RockSHox Reba RLT 120mm
    Avid BB7
    Full XT 3x10 Groupset
    Crankbrothers Eggbeater
    KCNC Handlebar & Seatpost
ZTR Arch EX + Hope + Bontrager 2.35 - Front
    Mavic 317 + MVR Racing Pro + Kenda Nevegal 2.1 - Rear

Butt feeling tells this bike ride taller than my previous Kona Cindercon '05.

Cant remember if I have posted in this thread already.... So will do again, if I did already haha

Have owned 4 Chammy frames, without doubt my favourite frame of all time.

Owned one of the second generation frames in my teens, the first with disc tabs. Was in as new condition but never got round to building it up, big regret.

This was my second, was an eBay purchase and advertised as a large, like a donut I didn't really look at the pics, got the frame then when building it up a couple months later I wondered why my fork steerer was too short, then realised it was an XL frame, built it up with a bit of a mix match of bits n pieces and still had fun on itPost your lizards. (Chameleon)-003-25.jpg

This was my last build and favourite bike ever owned.

    What year/model is this?

Hi there, just about to pull the trigger on this chameleon but wanted to know what year it is? The seller thinks it might be 2009 but I doubt it, any web site describing all chameleon models/years as to different frame builds???
Any objections as to this specific model?Post your lizards. (Chameleon)-1012815_10151748184784740_1644624024_n.jpg

Thanks in advance for any help!!!
