    medium for sure. a small would be tiny under you. a medium is a 16". even if you're building it as a mainly jump/street bike i'd go medium. if you want a tiny bike there'd be better frames more appropriate for use.

    Only two rides thus far. Super solid. To stand and crank on it is to know! The magic comes when i start riding hard. Need to put a shorter stem on it though, my old 90 feels a bit long. The multiposition gravitydropper teamed with the dual pos revelation is fantastic, climbs steep stuff with great ease and then with a flick at the crown and a push of a lever you're on a cross and downhill trail weapon.

    Going to put a Freeload touring rack on the back and ride around some of NZ sessioning various mtb destinations. One bike to rule them all!!!

    For all the months i been thinking about this i never saw a chammy out on the trails whilst regularly riding my old flexy cro-mo rig then 15mins into the maiden test ride i came across a dude with a fresh looking beauty in that bronze colour, also large, and with the same wheelset! The universe works in mysterious ways!

    Santa Cruz does not make changes to models every year.....

    So the frame itself probably didn't change.

    always set the bb (the eccentric) at 6 o'clock position. santa cruz say you can also run it at 12 (highest) but that would be insanely high. of course if you're running single speed you'll need to start back some to tension it where you want it. fork length and bottom bracket position do not relate.

    that's 25 kg on the rear triangle (sorry my usa bros you'll have to do the math), heavyweight touring. frame so stiff it's awesome.

    Here is mine. I Finished the build yesterday. Sorry for the poor quality picture, I only had my iphone on the inaugural ride.
    The philosophy for this build was a no-nonsense, sturdy, low maintenance bike which I could take more or less anywhere for doing more or less anything
    Some parts are not so bling, but it would seem that they meet my criteria with ease.
    I could have saved 1 kg with lighter cranks, forks, and tires, but higher end cranks are not worth the money imo, and I am a heavy guy at > 100kg in my bday suit. IMO for my weight, nothing beats a coil fork and beefy tires for an immense gain of confidence on the downhill.

    I got the frame second hand with hope headset for 350 bucks. The wheels trickled down from an upgrade to my Nomad. I had the seat, seatpost and front brake lying around. The rest is new.

    I like the geometry of the Chameleon which seems to be begging me to let go of the brakes and let her rip. Some people have made remarks about low tire clearance.
    With 2.5" maxxis Minion DHF in the rear, there is more than enough clearance around the top of the tire and about 0.5-1cm between sidewalls and chainstays. Perhaps massive tires like the Schwalbe Big Betty 2.4 could be a no-go. But honestly, its really a non issue for me.

    For the sake of keeping maintenance low, I have continuous cable guides for the transmission as opposed to having the cables exposed beneath the top tube. they are not yet fixed to the frame in an optimal way.

    The fork seems to function perfectly. The dual position system is similar to Marzocchi's ETA except that the fork maintains full functionality and sensitivity at both travel positions. I havent done long descents yet but I will probably give that a try tomorrow.

    I am reluctant to mount a chain guide, and I wish to keep the front as a triple ring. Let's see how the chaincatcher performs.

    I recently picked up my first Santa Cruz frame from a fellow forum member. Seeing as how there was little information on Chameleon builds out there, I thought I'd start this thread on my build process to hopefully help someone else in the future.

    Here is the '09 Chameleon green frame as I purchased it.



    My intention all along was to have a new EBB raw frame, but I couldn't see forking out $900 on a frame to only strip it, so I I purchased used.

    Here is the final result. First, the frame was chemically stripped (a huge pain the butt!), then the frame was completely smoothed using the finest 3M scotch bright pads. After going over the whole frame with the pads, I used 800 and then 1000 grit automotive sandpaper to wet sand the frame to prep for polishing. Finally, I used a Mothers powerball and cone with aluminum polish to go over the entire frame.



    I purchased factory decals and the head tube badge directly from Santa Cruz. They are super helpful and friendly. The ones on eBay are not very good at all!

    Here is the bike completed.

    Yup, just straight yellow. Its been used (obviously) so in the sunlight it may seem a bit more "dull", not quite as vibrant yellow as it once was.

    I enjoy the bike too, its great. I just need to lighten it up a little bit and it'll be perfect. I'm really wanting to get a Rockshox Revelation for it, the Domain 318 I have on there is very heavy and more travel than I really need. I'm running a 22/36/bash with an 11-34t cassette. I can get that baby to climb up anything in the "granny" while maintaining good pedaling speed on flat and downhills.

    I'm going to call Santa Cruz and request new stickers for it. I am very tempted to ask for silver stickers, as I may end up powdercoating the frame red like the one they have listed on the website.

    I just ordered TicTac Orange Chameleon, should take about 4 weeks to get it here to Scandinavia
    I am planning to build it for jumps and trails so I decided to get medium (I'm 5'10" tall...), but I still couldn't decide what fork to get. Some fork with 20mm axle for sure, so I am able to change wheels between my bikes. Marzocchi 55 140mm (R) or 150mm(CR) perhaps.
    I love the smell of the TF2 chain lube in the morning.

    I ride with 36T up front with a 11-32 cassette, which is just enough range for where I ride (I live in Holland).
    But I'm planning on taking this bike to the Alps instead of my FS, and than I'll need a granny gear

    Yeah sorry, just getting used to the forum, it was in relation to your polished EBB 09 Chameleon. I'm looking at doing the same, since finding a Large Anodised frame is looking like near on impossible (my first choice).

    I used Aircraft Grade paint stripper. This stuff is super nasty and can really hurt you. I took my time over 3 weeks getting the bike just right. The powder coat is extremely tough to remove. Make sure you only use nylon brushes and a plastic scrapper to remove the powder coat. Using anything else will put groves in the aluminum and scratch up the frame.

    My advice would be to NOT do this yourself. If you live in a metropolitan area, you should be able to find someone to media blast the frame for you (not sandblasting!) or have someone chemically dip the frame for you in a large tank (preferred).

    My $700 project, seriously...Spent $2,800 and 3 months of hustling on Ebay and Craigslists on the Chammy frame, 2 complete MTBs and other new and used parts, parted them out, kept what I wanted and sold everything else for $2,100. 90% complete, have to build up the rear Halo rim, install the front brake and rotor and dial it.

    Rebuilt my 05 Chameleon again a few months back for a DJ/slalom build, here's a rough history of past builds:
    2008: 1st - rigid singlespeed, short fork, V-brakes. Really lightweight, handled like a razor


    2009: 2nd - SS AM hardtail. 140mm travel Rockshox Pike, mullet brake setup (disc front, V-brake rear)
    Stripped the dark blue paint off the frame sometime around this time.


    2010: 3rd - AM hardtail 1x9. Rockshox Pike, SRAM X9 1x9 setup. Transition revolution wheelset
    2012: 4th - DJ/slalom bike.

    XL Chameleon was always way too small for XC so I figured I'd follow the wisdom of getting a size too small of Chameleon if you're planning on jumping on it. Other than the fork and handlebars, everything else were just spare parts sitting around so it was a pretty cheap bike to throw together.





    Rockshox Sektor RL Solo Air, lowered to 100mm
    Immortis Bucket Bars 32" wide, 4" ride
    Generic DK stem
    E13 STP chainguide
    Avid Road BB7s with super vintage XT levers.
    Kenda K-Rad tires til they wear out. I throw a Nevegal up front for dirt days.

    Love this bike so much.

    I am looking to getting a frame and building up a chameleon for XC/Single track type riding. I am 6'1 and weight about 190 lbs. I am trying to decide whether to go with a Large frame or a XL frame. Can anyone suggest a size?

    Also, does anyone know anything about turning a chameleon into a 69er?

    Has anyone else noticed that SC has updated the chameleon? I mean, it's not ground breaking, but it's different. 26" version of the Highball.
    It's got ISCG mounts and a tapered head tube now. Apparently it's a pound lighter too.

    GT - what are you running for chainrings on your latest build? It is indeed a blast to ride...

    For you guys running 1x9 can you provide a parts list of what it takes? It looks like the shifters just come with a spool of cable sticking out. As far as the sheath and other parts though?

    I think I'm using the stock Truvativ chainring that came with the Stylo crankset, either that or a 32T FSA ring that came with another SS FSA crank. Ultegra 12-27 cassette out back for decent tight gearing.

    BB mounted ISCG05 adapter to mount the E13 STP guide. SRAM X7 rear shifter, X9 rear derailleur.

    For 1x9, you'll need some form of chain retention, either full on chainguide or locked out FD/1x guide/thirdeye with a bashguard. Old front derailleur locked out works best but is ugly and offers no bash protection.

    New frame has slightly different geometry, I think I saw shorter chainstays and slacker head angle, factory ISCG05 mounts, tapered headtube. Pivoting rear dropouts for SS ability rather than EBB (3rd gen) or track ends (1st and 2nd gen). All worthwhile upgrades, and it looks a lot more like the gen1/2 frames which is a good thing IMO.

    What's the largest tire you can fit on the rear of the Chameleon? I mean, I know they say 2.35 is the largest, but I've see people complain that it doesnt' work. The new ones boast that they'll fit 2.5. What I'm looking for is a high volume tire, not necessarily the widest. I ride WTB Velociraptor 2.1 right now. It's good, but I feel like the Conti Mountain King 2.2 might provide a better ride and better traction. I'm just looking for some tire suggestions.

    I've routinely run 2.3-2.4" rear tires on my gen2 Chameleon and think that the newer ones have more clearance. No doubt at all that it would fit a 2.5 with due clearance.

    Made some changes and upgrades over the summer:

    Sold Rockshox Domain 318 and Bontrager Big Earl wheelset!

    Added:
    -Rockshox Revelation RCT3 Dual Position Air - 15mm QR - 150mm/130mm Travel
    -Bontrager "Duster" Wheelset --> Tubeless
    -Thomson "Set Back" seatpost
    -Easton Haven bars w/ Ergon Grips
    -Shimano SLX front derailleur

    Also added waterbottle cages to compliment the red accent color I'm trying to show. I'll be picking up a red "Salsa" seat post clamp too. Eventually I'd like to rebuild the wheels with upgraded hubs and red spokes or nipples.

    Santa Cruz sent me a full Chameleon decal set up. I will be powder-coating the frame this winter in the same yellow color to freshen it up. I'm hoping to upgrade the shifting group around the same time as the powder coat (X9 shifters & rear derailleur).

    In the meantime, she'll be on the trail as much as possible!

    Hey! Looks good! Love that color. I can't wait to see it after you've done the powder coating. I'm in the same boat. I've got a peeling decal on the drive side of my bike, but no other decals anywhere. I'm interested to see how easy it is for you to get the frame painted.

    It'll be pretty simple. I had a Norco frame done in a lime-green two summers ago now. Just remove all the components and decals. It turns out to be a really great finish that holds up well to the weather and abuse.

    How much weight did the powdercoating add to the Norco frame?

    Not enough for me to tell a difference, but then again I did not have it weighed. I will weigh the Chameleon frame (before and after) to get an idea....my guess is that the difference would be negligible.

    I don't feel the Chameleon frame was designed to compete in the weight catagory. Its strengths lie in stiffness, strength, and build flexibility.

    Wait what?

    The Chameleon is one of the longest running mountain bikes, there is a wealth of information about setting them up, especially in this thread. I had a friend tell me that you're not a real mountain biker until you've owned a Chameleon.

    Great frames for everything except all out freeriding. I've loved my Chameleon in each different way, just build it how you want it and the bike will be great.

    140 Float, 150 feels a little tall to me on climbs, and I didn't want the price, weight, and reliability issues of a travel adjust. It is a 32 chainring. What kind of guide are you looking for? I'm curious if anyone's had any luck running a clutch derailleur with a roller-less guide, or no guide at all?

    It was $200 on CRC, which is a steal for the Tower. The axle to crown length is in the center of the suggested range for the chameleon and it's got 120mm travel, so it all works out.

    EBB!!! Has anyone replaced the EBB on their Chameleon? I'm getting creaking from my crank and I'm betting it's water that's entered the EBB. I'm just wondering if replacing the stock wedge with something nicer from the someone like Bushnell or Phil Wood.

    I have a stream that I have to cross twice on my favorite local trail. I don't submerge the BB, but it gets very wet. It hasn't been a problem until recently.

    Just as an idea does it still make the same noise when you are standing up? I thought for sure my bottom bracket was squeaking but it ended up being the top part of my Thompson seat post when I was sitting down. I took it apart and cleaned the surfaces and it still makes a little noise.

    When tightened the EBB itself shouldn't squeak, and I don't see how water would cause any issues if it is tight, but maybe your bottom bracket itself is squeaking?

    It doesn't stop once I stand up. It's the BB or the EBB. I think I'm just going to grease them and then see what's up. Thanks!

    Hi all,

    I've been scoping this awesome thread for like the last 2 weeks and I finally decided it was time to reach out for some help from the fellow chameleon owners!

    I just picked up a chameleon 4 frame (size Large, 2012 I think?), and I am totally new to mountain biking, even more-so to putting together a bike. I am trying to build up this frame but I've had a really difficult time figuring out which parts are the right ones for a chameleon frame. I want to make sure that I don't try to put something on the bike that a) isn't the right size b) damages the bike c) would be unsafe.

    I have been scouring the web trying to find out which parts and dimensions are the right fit for the chameleon, but I have yet to run across anything that has the specifics on it (most of that info seems to have disappeared when the 2013 model came out).

    The parts that are most confusing to me to figure out are:
    1) Headset- which size and threadless or threaded?
    2) Fork (I know the travel limit goes from about 120mm-160mm) but what size is best and how long should the top single tube going through the headset (sorry if there is a specific name for it) be for a size large frame?
    3) Seatpost- what circumference will fit?

    Lots of respect for starting out and building a Chameleon. I've also noticed the 2013 specs are taking over. Following answers for your 2012:

    1) Headset: 1 1/8, NON-tapered; beware tapered headsets and forks, as they won't fit in the 2012 frame since it has a straight 1 1/8 headtube. Always threadless, especially for mtb. Even road bikes these days don't use threaded any more (thankfully).
    2) Fork: You're right about the recommended travel range; what's best really depends on where/how you're riding. More travel soaks up bigger hits on rough descents, but it also raises the front end of the bike, which can cause it to wander on steep climbs from not enough weight on the front wheel. You've also probably noticed there are some models of forks with a travel adjust feature, which may seem like the best of both worlds, enabling you to drop the travel for climbs, and increase it for descents. This may be something to consider, however be aware that travel-adjust, as opposed to fixed-travel forks, are generally more expensive, heavier, and possibly more prone to reliability issues. Sorry the "best travel" answer isn't more definite, it just depends on a lot of factors, including personal preference. As for the steerer tube length, you want to make sure it's long enough to accommodate the stack height of the headset cups (both top and bottom), the frame's headtube, the stem, and probably a spacer or two. As an example, I know the 2012 L Chameleon frame has a 5.1in head tube, an average headset total stack height is about 30mm, most stems have a 40mm clamp stack height, and let's suppose you want to run 20mm total of spacers. That's 130+30+40+20= 220mm steerer tube required. Without getting into how threadless headsets work (interesting read, necessary if you're planning on doing the build yourself), just always err on the side of too long a steerer tube when buying a fork. It can always be cut down, but not lengthened. This shouldn't be an issue if buying a new fork since they always come super long.
    3) Seatpost diameter is 30.9mm. Be sure you get one long enough as well so, when raised to your optimum pedaling height, there is a sufficient length in the frame to prevent scary bendage/snappage. However for the 2012 Chameleon I know from personal experience if it's too long, you won't be able to drop your seat very far (for descents) since the bottom of the seatpost will hit the water bottle bosses on the inside of the frame.

    Chameleon Raw Color

    Hello everyone... im from mexico city... always looking forward to build a chameleon... here in mexico it is very dificult to find some used frames... I was glimpsed by SoWal_MTBer built...

    SoWalMTBer: you did an excellent work with the frame, thanks again for your details.

    Then I bought this raw frame from SoWalMTBer... and after some days it arrived to Mexico... I stripped it again... asked for some decals to SC, this time in black color... some sand working and aluminum cleaning... I had some issues removing the headset... so I leaved it there... put the decals on... send the frame to a automotive professional ($100 USD) and applied a transparent gloss finish... the results are great... now im planning to build it up... more patience to find the proper equipment according to my riding style...

    It is a two stages work.....

    Stage 1: The first stage was by SoWal... he did an excellent work... please read his post.... Post your lizards. (Chameleon)

    Stage 2: I only stripped it again... it was only removing decals... SoWal didn´t applied any gloss... and the aluminum in raw color begans to get dirty .... the only thing I did was cleaning it up... and sanding again... and I sent it to an expert in automotive paint for the transparent finish ... you can applied a matte or brilliant... I choosed brilliant....

You'd be amazed... you can find top of the line bikes in mexican trails... you can always ride with someone else... with our toys, always and everywhere we need to be cautious... everywhere in the world we are always at risk that someone take it borrowed and didn't gave it back... enjoy your rides!!!

    Hi all

    Santa Cruz Chameleon (Large) 2011 frame

    Philosophy behind this build was to put together a bike that was: robust, do-it-all purpose, quiet and light. Making it light was not the most important thing for me, however I did try my best. After owning Reign X 2009 and Reign 1 2011, I really wanted a bike that pedalled great uphill, that could take some AM abuse on local trails and that can take me around town if need be.

    I've been saving for about 10 months to get all the parts and finally I put it together few weeks ago. I have been taking it to local XC trails and went to the city few times. All I can say that I LOVE IT. Sure, my behind needed some time to get used to no suspension at the back but now I'm very much used to it. I'm not the type of the rider who races and needs FS bike no matter what. In time, if I decide that I need FS bike, I'll get/build one but for now Lizard is more than enough. I love it!

    Question for all you Lizard owners. Just picked up a V4 Chameleon on the big Santa Cruz frame blowout, and need some advice. Should I stick to the current head angle, or should I put a 1 degree slacking headset from Works Components on it? Link to headset: Works Components - 1 0 Degree EC34 - Traditional 1 1 8 Fitment

    I plan to build this thing up for everything from dirt jumping to ripping flowy dh trails to pulling my kiddo around in the chariot. In general I like slacker bikes. I am putting a 150mm coil Sektor on it and going 1x10.

    Stoked to be joining the Lizard owning club, and will post a pic of my new whip when I get it done in a few weeks (still need to procure a crankset and a few other small bits, including headset).

    The Sektor should have a pretty long axle to crown length (529mm), as well as 10mm more travel than Santa Cruz's "sweet spot". This will give the bike a slacker angle to begin with.

    I have a Manitou Tower 120mm which has a 530mm axle to crown length and I love it, but I do trail riding. I guess use this information as you will, but I don't see it doing any damage. Personally I wouldn't, but that's just a personal taste thing.

    It depends on the axle to crown length. Off the top of my head, I think santa cruz said anything from 480-something to about 530mm. I didn't look that up. As the axle to crown length gets longer, the head tube angle gets more slack. Look up the details of the Fox 36 (i didn't readily find it on their site) and it should be in there.

    The Fox36 might be overkill for the Chameleon though. 160-180mm of travel? They suggest 100mm to 140mm as the "sweet spot", though there are many examples of it handling much more.

    Hmmm... not sure about those lengths and things but I wouldn't go over 160mm travel fork anyway. 36 - 160 feels just so nice and solid, without much extra weight from 150mm fork.

    My Manitou's a2c length is 530mm and that was at the high end of the range. That's really all I can say with any real certainty. I did my research when I bought the fork, but that was a few months ago and I don't remember everything exactly now.

    I've ridden a Nomad with a Fox 36 160mm on it and you're right, it feels amazing.
