Very sweet build! I just started my SC Small Nickel project myself and I don't have all my parts spec'ed out yet. What series Cane Creek headset did you go with? What shifters did you choose? What size rotors did you choose and are you happy with it? Any "Oh by the way" you ran into during the build? How does she roll on the trails?

Gonna use for commute, XC, Light Trail and Light 4X with the seat slammed down.

Well I figured out what was flexing in the rear triangle. I have a bearing going bad in the rear hub. So I repaired the hub and converted it to bolt on. Now the bike is stiffer now

The disk brake rub was caused by flexing in the rear drop outs. So I converted the hub to bolt on and that stiffened up the frames drop outs dramatically.

Impossible to get disc rub from the rear of a Nickel flexing, unless something else is wrong.

Started working the butcher a little. Added some azonic 762mm bars, Race Face AM/DH 60mm stem, and some WTB moto grips. Made a huge difference in comfort and control of the bike. Can't wait to get this thing out on the trail.

and for fun....threw my 29er wheel on the back of it

I just finished building up my new Santa Cruz Nickel 650b. I haven't taken it for a ride besides up and down the street and through the yard, but I'm going to put it through it's paces this afternoon. I'll try to write a good ride report for those that are interested in my thoughts of the bike.

    RWC shock needle bearings
    Answer ProTaper 720mmx25mm rise

will be definitely waiting on the review about the 650b wheels on the Nickel... I want to try it on my Butcher as well.

Does anyone has pictures of the shock bottomed out, in order to see how's the tire clearence. Thanks.

So today I took the maiden ride on my 650b Nickel. I did about 12 miles on trails I have ridden countless times on my Kona Kahuna HT 29er so I have a good base to judge the Nickel off of. Right off the bat I noticed how much rolling resistance the Nevegals had, like a lot of people have commented, it feels like you are dragging a boat anchor behind you on the flats and uphill. The Nevegals have tremendous grip in climbing and cornering and decent traction under braking. The second thing I noticed was comparing rollover of the 650b vs the 29er, the 650b doesn't roll over obstacles as good as the 29er but that was to be expected. The extra suspension the Nickel has over the 100mm fork on my HT 29er almost negates the rollover difference as long as I do my part. 29" wheels can almost make you lazy when riding over obstacles. The slacker Nickel doesn't climb as well as the steeper 29er, but that's not to say that the Nickel is a bad climber. When pointed downhill the Nickel really shines, it's playful, nimble, plush, pumps well, and can rail some corners.Like some people have said, the APP linkage really feels bottomless with a nice ramp up at the end of it's travel. The Monarch RC3 MM tune feels good, but a L rebound tune would probably work better with the Nickel. I initially had the rebound set in the middle, and it ended up being 2 clicks from full soft. The 3 way compression adjuster plain works. For most of the trail riding I left it on the middle setting and it felt great for just about everything. I don't think the Nickel really needs a shock with propedal or or artificial pedaling platform. The Manitou Minute Pro as with the Tower Pro on my Kona 29er is awesome, it's super plush and the ABS+ damper is top notch.

if you search in the 650 section there is a pic of a white nickel with a nevegal on it bottomed out. With my crossmark there was a ton of room left, prolly half an inch or more

Nickel arrived from Competetive Cyclist w/ old curved downtube???

Did I get an older one? It even has the old Styled graphics....

I do, however, kinda like the bend in the downtube.....Mine is a white medium. Is this rare to get the older style on a new order like this? Is the newer non curved downtube models any better?

I'm guessing slightly lighter. I'm guessing the geometry is the same. If it is a little different. That doesn't mean it's better.
