Lower headset for Tallboy C
Hi,
Can anyone PLEASE tell me the part # for a lower headset assembly for a TB C using a tapered fork?
Been rummaging through all the posts and my eyes are glazed over.....
Cane Creek part # or equivalent would be great..
Thanks,
Mike

It is any external cup 49mm type with a bearing for 1.5" lower steerer diameter. Cane creek 40 series is a good value, but tons of options.

The Tallboy C uses a standard (external) 1.5" lower cup.
Lower Cup:
SHIS:EC49/40 - 1.5" Traditional (TR 1.5")
The above post that stated they were using a ZS (zero stack) lower cup will not work. There is no ZS lower cup that runs a 1.5" steerer into a mixed taper (or even 1.5") headtube.
To use a tapered fork these are the cane creek parts:
The Cane Creek mid level:
Cane Creek 40.EC49/40.Bottom Assembly
The Cane Creek top level:
Cane Creek 110.EC49/40.Bottom Assembly

When you use the cane creek headset finder is shows a EC49/30. What's the difference between that and the 49/40?

/30 is for 1.125" steer tube

Thanks. Yes, I have a straight steer tube.

You want the 49/44 conversion headset. if you have a straight 1 1/8 steered. Non tapered.

The fit finder is correct... the bottom half is 49/30, you can do zero stack or external. I don't even think they make a 49/44. The number before the slash is the size of your head tube. (49 for 1.5" lower) The number after the slash is the diameter of the place the crown race mounts on the fork. (30 for 1.125" fork)
Top Headset:
SHIS:ZS44 - 1-1/8" ZeroStack (ZS) Threadless
Bottom Headset:
SHIS:EC49/30 - 1.5" Traditional to 1-1/8" Conversion
or
SHIS:ZS49/30 - 1.5" Traditional to 1-1/8" Conversion

I was thinking tour and bottom.

I have a cane creek 40 set laying around
PM Me. It's for tapered. If I recall you can use tapered bearings with a straight steerer if you use one of these base plates:
2013 Cane Creek 110-Series Conversion Crown Race - Competitive Cyclist

Thanks but I'm good. Purchased the ZS44 - 1-1/8" ZeroStack and the EC49/30 - 1.5" Traditional to 1-1/8" Conversion and had the cups installed today.

Just bought a Tallboy frame from the SC sale and trying to figure out the headset issue for a straight steerer, but would like to have the option of keeping the same headset if I go to a tapered fork. Does the EC49/30 - 1.5" Traditional to 1-1/8" Conversion bottom headset you bought have a crown race that is doing the reducing that could just be replaced?
Or does anyone know if I should just buy the normal 1.5 bottom headset and figure out where to buy the reducing crown race. Does it work this way?

As I understand it, the answer is yes. When I upgrade my fork to a tapered steerer, all I will need to purchase is a new 1.5 crown race for my lower cup.
The other option is to buy a new 1.5 lower/bottom bearing cup which comes with a 1.5 crown race.
