I've got a new Blur and I'd like to drop the big ring in favor of an e13 bashguard. I HIGHLY doubt its as simple as unscrewing the big ring and putting the bash on . . . . I assume I have to remove the cranks to do this, no? I can't seem to get a straight answer from google on this.
That is correct no need to pull the crank to install a bashguard.
The only gotcha is that the bolts from the chainring may be too short for the bashguard. The blackspire bash guards come with longer bolts. I am not sure what is necessary on the e13 bashguards.
Sounds like you're on the right track with the bashguard...
For future ref, removing the crankset is very easy. Remove the left crank (differ by brand but should be self explainatory if you take a look at it - mine just has 1 large hex bolt that goes directly towards the BB. I unsrew that all of the way and remove the left crank arm). Once you have the left arm removed, and with the chain removed, just pull the rest (right crank arm assembly) out of the BB to the right. Voila... Crankset removed!
