I'm considering a matte black Tallboy and as I understand it, it is basically naked carbon...am wondering how the finish is holding up in real life use. Thanks for any feedback.
A. its not naked carbon. the matte finish is a coating over the carbon
B. just like every matte finish it will probably be hard to get "really" clean and if something rubs it, it will tend to "polish up"
A bike shop here in knoxville has one and it was a demo bike they had. I had the same question but the guy that worked there said when he rode it around a couple of local trails (through mud and dust). He said it was almost like you could just wipe it off because it didnt stick. As far as polishing up goes, it wont really do that unless you use a cleaner that isnt meant to go on the carbon fiber and it will eat away at the coating. I have some carbon fiber on my car and ive taken it out to the track and it holds up really well....except for those damn rocks....grrr
Cliff notes- The dirt wipes off easily. Dont use just any ole cleaner. Get it because it looks sweet.
I have had my Tallboy 11 months now.....I have had zero issues with the matte carbon finish......it does pretty much just wipes off....even the residue from my HEED on the downtube and BB shell comes off pretty easy with a little Simple Green. I have had what I thought were scratches, but they rubbed right out.
Just keep in mind, that the top layer of carbon is usually a cosmetic layer.....they tend not to have any structural characteristics.
teamdicky. that was the coolest spin I have ever seen! Was that like a 1080?
I have seen the gloss finishes become blemished after a shuttle ride to the top, from
bikes clanging against each other. Do you think the matte carbon will hold up better
than the gloss carbon in such circumstances? I have found that glossy + carbon =
sad sight after 50 hours of riding.
Thanks in advance...

We did a point to point shuttle with 11 riders.....I ended up with 9 bikes in the back of my truck.....somehow, my Tallboy ended up on the bottom of the pile, leaned up against the adjustable tie down cleat. For 45 miuntes the bikes banged around the bed of my truck on the return trip.........all that showed up on my down tube was a little scuff where the "Santa Cruz" lable was. Would have done the same thing to a PC frame with decal, Clearcoated frame, etc.
Even with my toxic sweat, the matte finish still wipes clean.
It was a chest mount and the camera did fly off. I did do some cartwheeling (according to eyewitnesses), but the camera flew off before I completed my Triple Lindy.
Still dealing with it. Ice, ibuprofen, elevation, and patience.
Looks like another weekend's gonna slip by without a mountain bike ride.
