ANOTHER new bike? 5010 just hit SC's website.

    LOL, it seems that the Solo has been renamed 5010? 5 = S, 1 = L.

    Must be a copyright infringement.

To all the "Solo" owners out there, you now own a rare bike. I wonder when we will see bikes with "5010" on their frames. I think the renamed bikes are at Interbike. I saw a post on another site mentioning 5010 at Interbike.

Only bike company that had Bantam was Schwinn in 1955, but the trademark is marked as dead. I checked the database and SC does have some live trademarks, Bantam is not one of them.

If they're really changing the name from Solo to 5010, that's a pretty lame choice.

It doesn't appear that any reseller websites, such as Competitive Cyclist, have changed their sites yet, but the 5010 was named one of Bike Radar's best in show at Interbike: Best In Show - Interbike 2013 - BikeRadar

How can someone trademark the name solo?

I don't think you can copy write the word in general. But, I do think you can copy right it pertaining to something like a product or business, bikes or cups for instance.

    But I could be wrong.

Copyright is not relevant here, but trademark does apply. You can trademark a recognizable name or logo, but the the trademark is only valid as long as you continue to use the mark and pursue trademark infringement. Trademark infringement is only relevant in similar industries where "distinctiveness" is important. So you can't sue the red cup manufacturer!

In practice: I believe Rocky Mountain holds the trademark. If they were to discontinue the "Solo" model I think they have 3-5 years of inactivity before the trademark expires. If they DIDN'T pursue Santa Cruz for infringement, then their trademark is no longer valid.

Yeah, big mistake on SCs part. Always have to do a trademark search before you name something. Still an awesome bike, just a goofy name now.

SC could call it the "Napolean". Your age will determine whether you have to google to understand the reference or not.

5070 would have been a better name choice...upside down mirror image makes the S a backward 5 and the L a backward 7. Solo was a lame name and 5010 is not much better

a 7 is a "T" not a L. they got it right, all things considered. I wouldn't be surprised to see the name change against next year.
