During the Land Run 100 this past Saturday a huge number of Salsa bikes snapped derailleur hangers, mine included. I think my failure was caused by muck drug into the derailleur by the chain. The multiple hanger failures and what I've read on the net makes me wonder if the hanger might be a little weak. I understand I need it to break before bending my frame or twisting the assembly.
Should I replace the hanger with an aftermarket hanger? Are there strength ratings one can compare?
Any other thoughts on riding in very thick muck? Do I need to walk the bike once the muck starts sticking to everything?
