Spearfish bent skewer from dérailleur hanger bolts?!

Local shop replaced my broken hanger a couple weeks ago, and I just noticed the two hanger bolts are sticking out a little too far and bent the skewer...has anyone run into this problem? Could the bolts have pushed through some how or did the shop bungle this?

Also, where can I buy some bolts? I have come up empty handed...

Spearfish bent skewer from dérailleur hanger bolts?!

Which frame - 135mm QR or 142mm threaded?

Spearfish bent skewer from dérailleur hanger bolts?!

I dont know about the 135mm hanger, but the screws for the 142mm hanger are tiny, easy to strip the hex head and don't have loctite - absolutely unacceptable design. Although it's a design flaw - In your case I'd still say the shop is responsible for your bent skewer because they did not ensure the screws were installed safely.

I can't speak specifically about this situation but in a most cases replacement hangers will come with new bolts and, since the hanger is usually made and sold by a third party, they aren't always the right size. They can be too long, short, have the wrong head, or in the case of counter sunk heads they may not sit flush when installed. It is the job of the installer to determine the correct bolts, be they new, old, or sourced otherwise. I don't think you would be in the wrong to swing by the shop, explain the problem and see what they will do for you.

A local fastener supplier should be able to help you sourcing new bolts. It probably best to stop in with the old bolts and tell them what your looking for. If that doesn't pan out try McMaster-Carr.

Motivated - Loc-tite 222 should solve your problems.

I haven't found a hanger for my Spearfish from anyone other than Salsa or other QBP owned company. In other words they are all the same. The last two I bought came with blue loctite on the tiny mount screws.

    Wheels Manufacturing Derailleur Hanger 142

I can tell you from experience that the bolts that come with wheels hangers are rarely perfect.

Wheels Mfg is a QBP owned company. I can't imagine them making multiple hangers to fit the same bike. Maybe...

Since when? And if so why would they see to their biggest competitors?

Not sure when... Who wouldn't sell to the competition?

According to their business model QBP won't. I mean you don't see surly, salsa, dimension, etc being sold by, well, pretty much every other major US distributor. Not to mention Wheels seems to be running completely separate from Q, unlike every other Q brand.

Not saying your wrong, just that I don't see any evidence to the contrary.

    No it's not.

Are you perhaps confusing them with Problem Solvers?

Maybe.. On a side note, I installed a new hanger last night and had the same issue. The mounting bolts were long enough to poke out of the other side of the hanger about .5mm. The originals were shorter and looked to have been filed down.

I got some Wheels Mfg. hangers and the bolts are definitely long. I just tightened them up and cut them flush with a dremel.

I had the same problem on my 2012 Spearfish 2, but it didn't bend the skewer. My LBS ended up filing-down the hanger bolts to fit and not get in the way of the skewer. Seems strange, but it worked.
