I just got an XL 2013 El Mariachi 2 after a long time of deliberating and saving. All built up and ready to go, but it'll be another month at least before I can ride it. God damn lingering Vermont winter!
No pics now, but she's a beauty. Looks way better in person than in pictures (it's the black one with green accents).

Tyres: Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 28x1.75. They're a tight (but tool-free) fit on the Arch Ex rims and I'm currently running them with tubes. They were fine for the drier sections but of little use in the slushy snow I often encountered. Fun though!

Seat bag is a Revelate Viscacha. They've been slightly modified for 2013. That's it at more-or-less maximum length. I was a bit worried it would swing about a lot but there's only a 4-season sleeping bag in there and it had no effect on handling.

The custom decals are from Slik Graphics. They'll match almost any colour you can think of and I chose the lime green to go with the Jagwire hoses and Charge saddle.

    El Mariachi Racing

Fundraiser event for a local church. Very fun course. This is my first time competing in Master A class. Not too many racers showed up for that category but at least the top 2 of the master A national championship were there. The El Mar felt great.

Great looking bike! I really like that blue color, and the photos barely do it justice. For the last 2 years, Salsa has really done an outstanding job with their graphics and paint colors.

New 2013 Salsa El Mariachi 3 (Small)

2013 Salsa El Mariachi 3 in Small size with few modifications was delivered yesterday. It was late into the night when I finished putting the bike together, so photos will be coming later (updated with photos attached below).

I preferred the El Mar2 in black/green, but the shop only had El Mar 3 in the small size that I needed. I wasn't quite sure on the red color as most of my bikes have been either blue or black. But red turned out to be a beautiful bike in person. Only downsize is that it's quite bit heavier than I had anticipated. I don't have the actual weight for the stock small size as few modifications were made before it was shipped out:
    * changed the fork to Reba RL
    * changed brakes from Elixir 1 to Shimano SLX
    * changed shifters from Deore to SLX
    * changed stock seat to WTB Rocket V SLT
With the above changes, the bike weighed 29.1lbs without pedals. My assumption is that stock would have weighed a bit over 30lbs.

I also made few additional changes to it:
    * changed stock bar to Easton EC70 carbon riser (weight difference of about 150g)
    * changed stem to Thomson x4 70mm
    * changed grip to ODI Rogue lock-on grips
    * added Time ATAC XS pedals.
Total weight of the bike is 29.3 lbs.

Unless I spend some money on the wheels and tires, cassette and crankset, it looks like it's going to be a bit difficult to get to sub 26 lbs bike that I was hoping for.

For now, going to just enjoy riding.

Here is my new bike. Not as agile as the Stumpjumper I had just before but stiff, stable and fast. Love it so far, will set up as 1x9 soon, been riding SS exclusively the last 3yrs

Hey Gilby, how does it ride with the fork at 120? Do you notice much difference with the Maxle in back?

I think it rides great at 120mm. The extra travel and slightly decreased head angle make it handle rough descents noticeably better. At first it felt a little "tall" while cornering, but when I switched to a 1x10 setup I was able to make the chainstays as short as the frame allows. I'm surprised how much better it feels even though they're only about 1/3" shorter. Another benefit of this is a wheelbase closer to where it was with the fork at 100mm. It still climbs really well too. Overall, I have no desire to put it back to 100mm despite voiding my warranty.

I converted to the Maxle at the time I swapped out the stock wheelset for the Flow EX's. The bike definitely feels more solid, but this probably has a lot more to do with the wheels than anything else. I would say the performance gain, if there is any, is not worth the cost of the upgrade. The Maxle system itself is much better than standard QR, though.

Interesting. I might have to try mine at 120 for a bit. Anyway, nice looking bike.

The 2013 color is awesome, but the 2014 model has a bent seat tube to create shorter chain stays, which I suspect will be an improvement over prior years' models of the El Mar. That said, I love my 2013 El Mar and have never met anyone who doesn't love his /hers. If you're going to get a 2013, you might want to try to press for a discount given the substantial change in the 2014 frame model.

Either way, post some pics of your new El Mar when you get it.

    Cheers,

    Big Tiki
