Can El Mariachi be happy with a Crud?

I put a 2009 Crud Catcher front fender on my 2007 El Mariachi and started to have shifting issues. Then it dawned on: I've used a lot of Cruds before but never with downtube routed cables before. I don't see a way to make it clear the rear derailleur cable enough to not rub on the cables and interfere with shifting. Any ideas?

I use a Planet Bike grunge board -

Since the front and back edges hug the tube instead of curling under it actually tucks neatly under the cables. Maybe you could notch out galleys for the cables or drill out pass-throughs?

    I'll give that a try

I haven't yet but I noticed the stock Shimano housing was cracking anyway so I'll see if that's workable. It's another reason to dislike down tube mounted cables though.

I could try that too. The Crud is a larger fender with better coverage though.

I use that CC on my Ala Cart with no shifting issues.

Just run the O-rings under the cables. The cables do rub a bit but not enough to affect the performance.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

I think the issue on the EM is because the cables stick out a larger distance from the downtube and at at a different angle than the Ala Carte. I'm thinking this is most likely because of the larger diameter of the eccentric bottom bracket.
