Have one on my 2012 Ti El Mariachi and it's a perfect combo. Not sure about the steel El Mar, but on the Ti it was easy to sort out the tapered steerer with a Cane Creek 40 Series EC44/40 headset. I love the through axle -- it's super precise no matter how in-over-my-head I may be.

I'm running the Whiskey Parts No 7 carbon fork on my 2012 El Mar. It's a great complement to the frame.

All of the niner forks are compatible, since you can use different headset parts to fit the straight or tapered steerer tubes of the forks.

We have done builds with both the Niner CF fork and the Whisky Parts CF forks. I personally have the Whisky on my Selma and really do like it - seems to be very precise-handling on the Salsa frame and really stable. Mine (as well as Plantdude's) and a couple others we have done are 39mm rake, which gives the bike a bit more trail. The Niner fork at 45mm makes for a bit quicker-handling - and a Whisky is available at that same rake, if you want a faster-responding, slightly less-stable ride.
