What gear are you in on the cassette when it comes off the front chainring? Or does it never stay on the chainring? If it never stays there, they need to adjust the front shifter cables properly any maybe the high limit screw.

With a fresh chain, you really only have a 2x8 drivetrain on the big front ring until the chain has a bit of wear on it, so you won't be able to consistently get to those two biggest cogs from the bigger chainring until you have 4-5 hours of riding on the chain.

Actually they have difficulty finding the middle with the front derailleur either it doesn't go up on the chainring when on the biggest rear cogs or if we set it to go up the biggest chainring by pushin the shifter to the extreme, the next time we shift it up it goes over. We also swapped shifter and derailleur with the same result. Any other thoughts?
