Rocky Mountain Element Team RSL - Claro Brasil Ride Edition

    Hi fellows,

Let me share my experience on such a new bike hitting the market - Element RSL

I rode the new Element on Brazil last November. The race had 6stages and more than 500Km with a lot of Mud, Sand, Rivers, Rocks..all kinds of sweet things for bike ride.

You can see info here : http://www.clarobrasilride.com/site/Home

So I built it up around my sponsors - SRAM with all their weapons - Rock Shox, AVID, Truvativ. Mavic SLR was the choice for the wheels but the 2008 version which match better with color scene.

I rode for the first time with 2x10, the new XO with perfect color match - red\black. The error was choosing 12-36 cassette which is not enough for fast trails.

Tires were Maxxis Advantage Kevlar in front and Crossmark Tubless rear.

I have to say that I was afraid to use a FS bike after a life using hardtails from Merida, Scott and of course RM Vertex all this year. The thing is that I dont go back, I loved the bike, no bob, tremendous stiffness and works like no one in technical trails. I could pedal over the rocks and go fast on DH.

The lower BB could be a issue and you need to ''know'' how to medal with this bike. On the beginning you can hit some rocks but after some ''practice'' the problem is solved.

The other issue is how you tighten the rear QR, it should be the ''right'' size. I've started with a weight weenie QR but soon I changed for a Mavic because its much more stronger.

RM did a great job on this bike!!

By the way, this were our race kit

The right color to be seen in the middle of the jungle!

    Merry Xmas to everyone!

Nice, it's good to have a ride report like that.

I think I'll be upgrading my DT 240S rear hub to the 10mm RWS axle.

I'm curious, did you have any more pedal strike than you might have with your Vertex? You can get as much increase in BB height by running a large volume tire as you can switching to the 120mm travel MSL (+7mm).

I had a better ride for sure..more pleasure, less tired each day!

I'll go to BC Bike Race in 2011, what do you think that is better, Element or Vertex?

Geoff Kabush seemed to do quite well on his Element at BCBR in 2010. Andreas Hestler rode the Element MSL in the BCBR last year, and Chris Sheppard rode another MSL in the race as well.

And Marie-Hélčne Prémont rode her Element Team at the 2010 Xterra World Champs in Maui and she was much faster than she was on her Vertex RSL in 2009 (but ended up with three flats in the last 4 km of the bike stage though)

    Congrats on your ride.

The above is my biggest ***** about the 2 X whatever set-ups...no top end.

    Nice report Joao.

What chainring combo were you running with the 12-36 cassette?
I would be willing to bet that the Element is a much better choice for the BC Bike Race than the Vertex. In general the BC Bike Race has more technical trails than the Trans Rockies that you did a couple of years ago.

I used a 28\42 rings. Not enough for flat trails...With a 11 teeth on the back I will improve a lot the racio!

It was a nightmare the TR with a hardtail and I don't want to have it again. I though that the BC BR was less technical, but with this info, I'll ride with FS!!

Most of the BCBR technical trails are more loamy trail and rocks and wood sort of technical. This is part of the North Shore time trial section uphill from 2010.
