    Element MSL 3x10 to 2x10 woes...

    I know this has been discussed, I searched but didn't find it... So forgive me, but I need some help. (yes, I cross posted in the Drivetrain forum...) I'm desperate...

    Okay, I'm fed up... I can't get my stuff dialed. It either won't shift up or it won't drop down. Orignally I had full XT 3x10 drivetrain on my 2012 RM Element MSL 50.

    I installed Blackspire Super Pro 38/26 chainrings to go 2x10 on my M780 cranks. I couldn't get the shifting dialed using the 3 speed FD. I tried going from both 1-2 position and overclocking go 2-3. The shifting was just crap, it still wont either shift up, or it wont shift down, depending on tension (just a couple 1/4 turn on the barrel). So, I purchased a new FD785 derailleur for 2x10 and the SLX 670 shifter. Using the 2 position switch on the shifter, the shifting is still crappy. I'm using the shimano HG-X chain, new.

    I should mention, it works great in the stand, but as soon as I'm out pedaling it quits working. I've had my shop look at it, as well as a mechanic at a race, whom I've known for a decade, and they couldn't get it dialed either. I checked the housing under the BB and it's plenty long. I'm pretty convinced you just cant use 2x10 ring sizes on 3x10 cranks, or is that crazy?

    Any ideas...? I'm new to RM and the Element. I know it has it's quirks, but the support here seems amazing so I should be able to get this figured out!

    Are the Blackspire rings clocked correctly on the crank so that the shift ramps are matched up? Even though Blackspire says that their Super Pro rings are compatible with the M785 crank in a 2x10 configuration, it would be worth checking the chainring spacing to confirm that it matches the Shimano chainring spacing.

    The Shimano 780 XT gear 2x10 combo is 24/38, so did you have to space your FD upwards to have the FD inner cage clear the inner ring when it is shifted into the 38T ring position? How much clearance do you have between the big ring and the FD cage?
