    Element 970 Crank Options??

I'm probably over thinking this, but I need help!

I sold and am switching from SRAM to Shimano over the winter and want to go XTR 2x10. But, I want a 38/24 Combo and you can't get that for XTR, just 38/26.

I actually want a 36/22 but then I need SRAM or Race Face. The RF is an option, but cannot find them. You can get them in SLX but want something nicer.

So, do I go XT 38/24, are they going to make a XTR in 38/24,

Do I go triple on a 29er 42-32-24T Might be the best option for my climbing abilities.

And, what Shimano Bottom Bracket do I buy for this frame??

    Any advice is appreciated?

    Thanks!

The BB is a BB-92 press fit for a 41mm shell, either the Shimano HT2 (SMBB91-41A) or Race Face BB-92 will work.

    Don't buy a BB-92-42 which is for a 42mm diameter shell.

If you want really low 36/22 crank gears you might need to stick with a 9 speed crankset that had those lower ratios. I'm running 3x9 drivetrains on my Element RSL and MSL because I didn't want to give up that low 22:34 ratio (1.55:1).

If you were able to ride a 22:32 (1.45:1) before you can almost get there again with a 26:36 (1.38) low gear combo, but if you are used to a 22:34 then use the new 24/38 RF Turbines and run a 24:36 (1.5) low gear combo.

Rocky, Your MSL is a 26er right? Does any of this make any difference on a 29er with the bigger wheels?

The low gears are more necessary on a 29" for climbing as the bigger wheels take more effort to turn. It's only an issue on steep climbs, when I test rode an Element 950 at Mont Sainte Anne this past summer, I didn't really notice the lack of low gears, but I wasn't doing any steep climbs there.

The same BB info applies to the 950/970 Elements.

38/24 it is if I want Shimano or Race Face. I guess if I want 36/22 I need to go SRAM X9 double with a bash guard.

Any thoughts on which is a better crank set, Shimano XT or the RF Turbine?

I'd go with the new RF Turbines, I think they're slicker looking and about the same weight. The new RF rings are quite good.

You can always switch out the 24 for a 22. As long as it is 104 BCD (bold centre diameter) a standard 22 ring will fit fine with a very slight deterioration in shift quality. I have an XT triple originally 24-32-42 now 22-32-42 and it works just fine. Pretty sure the shimano 2 x 10 is also 104 BCD for the small chain ring.

Obviously you'll also want to run a 11-36 cassette not an 11-34

Will probably go with a triple and a 22 ring.
But, does Shimano make an E type triple f. der. for this frame, I can't find one on there site?
    Thanks.

    The 2013 Element 970 BC Editions uses shimano SLX E type 3 x 10.

    Probably this one
